Zuzana aputová, MPTP (born June 21, 1973) is the President of Slovakia since June 15, 2019. She is a Slovak politician, lawyer, and environmental activist. aputová is Slovakia’s first female president and the country’s youngest president, having been elected at the age of 45.

Career

Following her education, aputová worked in the Pezinok municipal government, first as an assistant in the legal branch, then as a deputy to the town mayor. She then worked with the Open Society Foundations in the non-profit sector, where she was in charge of public administration and the problem of neglected and exploited girls. She then served as a project planner for urban economic advancement at the neighbourhood organisation EQ Klub. Between 2001 and 2017, aputová worked as a lawyer for Via Iuris, a civic agency (since 2010), and as a campaign planner for Greenpeace. She has been at the frontline of a civic movement in Pezinok for more than ten years to prevent the approval of another landfill that would worsen contamination of the city’s soil, air, and water. In 2013, the Supreme Court of Slovakia [sk] ruled that the proposed landfill was unconstitutional and violated environmental standards, bringing the battle against it to a close. aputová has owned and operated her own law practise, as well as published and co-authored a number of publications. She is a member of the Environmental Law Alliance Worldwide (ELAW), which is a global network of environmental lawyers and judges.

In December 2017, aputová declared her membership in the newly formed Progressive Slovakia opposition, and at the party’s first congress in January 2018, she was elected as Vice-Chairwoman, assisting Ivan tefunko [sk] in his efforts to ensure the representation of a viable socially liberal alternative to the conservative status quo in Slovakia. In the 2019 Slovak presidential election, aputová ran as the party’s nominee and was elected president in the second round. After her biggest challenger, Robert Mistrk, withdrawn from the campaign and endorsed her on 26 February 2019, aputová revealed her bid for the Slovak presidency in the 2019 presidential race at a press conference on March 29, 2018. She had been endorsed by Progressive Slovakia, SaS, and SPOLU. After the assassination of investigative journalist Ján Kuciak, she said she felt obligated to run for President. The 41.79 percent vote in the second round was the lowest in any round of elections in a similar election in Slovakia. The number of votes required to elect aputová was also the smallest for any directly elected Slovakian president to date. Her inauguration as president took place in Bratislava on June 15, 2019, during a special session of the National Council.
