His father, John Marshall Berry, was a lawyer and an officer with the Burley Tobacco Growers Association. His mother, Virginia Erdman Berry, was John Marshall Berry’s wife. He was their son. His upbringing in a family with a long tradition of farming was crucial in the formation of his beliefs and values when he was a child.
