Warrick Dunn Biography and Wiki:

Warrick De’Mon Dunn is a former running back in American football. He was a member of the National Football League (NFL) for a total of twelve seasons during his career. Dunn was born on January 5, 1975. After graduating from Florida State University with a degree in football, he went on to be selected 12th overall by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 1997 NFL Draft. Dunn was selected to play in three different Pro Bowls over his career and received the AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award in 1997. After finishing his playing career, Dunn joined the ownership group of the Falcons, which is led by Arthur Blank, and acquired a minority investment.

Dunn played quarterback, cornerback, and running back at Catholic High School, which is located in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. During his sophomore season, he was an integral part of the Catholic High team that advanced all the way to the state 4A championship game for the very first time in the school’s history. In his senior year, USA Today recognised him as an All-America honorable mention athlete. On January 7, 1993, armed robbers ambushed and killed Betty Smothers, the mother of Dunn Smothers. Betty Smothers was an off-duty police officer who was escorting a businesswoman to a bank so that she could make a night deposit. For the murder, three individuals were arrested, and two of them are currently on the state’s death row.

Two days after his 18th birthday, Dunn took over as the leader of his household and was responsible for the upbringing of his younger siblings. At the Louisiana State Penitentiary in 2007, Dunn had a conversation with one of the inmates who had been convicted. At Florida State University, where he majored in information studies and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 1997, Dunn had a fruitful and successful undergraduate experience. He is the current holder of multiple running records at Florida State, including the record for most career rushing yards (3,959) and the record for most rushing yards in a season (1,418), both of which were set in 1995. Dunn is the only Seminole who has rushed for more than one thousand yards in each of the past three seasons. He was chosen for All-ACC honours on three separate occasions.

The university has decided to retire Dunn’s jersey along with those of a number of other Seminoles players, including Fred Biletnikoff, Ron Sellers, Ron Simmons, Charlie Ward, Deion Sanders, and Chris Weinke. It is possible that Seminole players may continue to wear the number 28, but his jersey will be displayed in the Moore Athletic Center at Florida State University. Additionally, in 1993, he was a part of the Florida State team that won the National Championship. Nigel Terrell, a redshirt sophomore, now wears the number 28 that had belonged to Dunn. Dunn was also a distinguished athlete in the sport of track and field, earning recognition as an Associated Press All-American while competing for Florida State University on the men’s 4×100-meter relay team.

During the four years that Dunn was a student at Florida State, he was a member of the Track and Field team for the Seminoles, where he ran the sprints. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers chose Dunn in the first round of the 1997 NFL Draft with the 12th overall choice. This was Dunn’s debut year in the league. In his first year with the Buccaneers, Dunn made an early contribution to the team’s success. As the year came to a close, he was honoured with both a spot on the NFC Pro Bowl squad and the title of Offensive Rookie of the Year from the Associated Press. Dunn started his career in Tampa Bay, where he played for five years and was twice selected for the Pro Bowl during that time (1997, 2000).

During the offseason of the 2002 NFL season, Dunn was a free agency and signed with the Atlanta Falcons. Once again, he was able to make a significant contribution to his club by scoring a total of 9 touchdowns, and during that season, he led the league in average yards gained per run with 5.4. In spite of the fact that he and T.J. Duckett shared carries during the 2004 season, Dunn amassed the most running touchdowns of his career with nine. He also led the club in rushing yards with 1,106 despite sharing carries. Following another year in which he led his club in rushing yards, Dunn was selected for the NFC Pro Bowl team in 2005, making this his third time being chosen for the roster. Dunn has only missed ten games over the course of his career, and he has a total of 2,256 carries, 9,461 yards, 43 touchdowns, and an average of 4.2 yards per carry.

After his first ten seasons, Dunn finished with a total of over 1,000 rushing yards and receiving yards combined. When the Falcons’ starting quarterback Byron Leftish was sidelined with a high ankle sprain during the 2007 season, Dunn filled in for him as the team’s third string emergency quarterback behind Joey Harrington and Chris Redman. This was a position that Dunn had previously played in high school. As of the 22nd of November in 2007, Dunn is one of just ten running backs that are 5’11” or shorter to have rushed for 10,000 yards. Dunn asked the Falcons to waive him on March 3, 2008, and the team complied with his request. This happened just one day after the Falcons had signed Michael Turner, a former backup running back for the San Diego Chargers. [2] On December 17, 2009, he was accepted into the Atlanta Falcons organisation as a minority owner.

Dunn re-joined the Buccaneers on March 10, 2008, after signing a contract worth $6 million over the course of two years with the team. Since rejoining the Buccaneers, Dunn recorded his first game with 100 yards of total offence in week 6’s matchup against the Carolina Panthers. On February 25, 2009, the Buccaneers waived Dunn’s contract with the team. In 1997, Dunn began the programme known as Homes for the Holidays (HFTH). In 2002, he formed Warrick Dunn Charities (WDC) with the intention of expanding the range of programmes and services he offered. Single-parent families who are successful in purchasing their first house can earn prizes through the HFTH programme. Families that will receive assistance from HFTH are selected through a relationship with Habitat for Humanity affiliates and WDC. These families will receive assistance with the down payment and the purchase of fully furnished homes.

HFTH has provided assistance to over 115 single parents and over 300 dependents as of the month of July 2012 in the cities of Atlanta, Baton Rouge, Tampa, and Tallahassee. WDC is of the opinion that children are able to flourish educationally, socially, and economically if they are provided with a positive home environment by their family. Over the years, many have taken notice of Dunn’s many accomplishments. Because of his programme, he was given the Giant Steps Award for civic leadership, which was given to him by former President Bill Clinton. The Walter Payton Man of the Year Award was given to Dunn in 2005. This award is the only one of its kind in the National Football League (NFL), and it is named after a running back for the Chicago Bears who passed away in 1999. The award recognizes a player not only for his excellence on the field but also for his contributions to the community.

After Hurricane Katrina, Dunn issued a challenge to all NFL players, with the exception of those who play for the New Orleans Saints, to make a contribution of at least $5,000 to the relief effort. Contributions totaling more than $5 million were made to the project. A charitable organisation called Athletes for Hope was established in 2007 by Dunn, along with Andre Agassi, Muhammad Ali, Lance Armstrong, Jeff Gordon, Mia Hamm, Tony Hawk, Andrea Jaeger, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Mario Lemieux, Alonzo Mourning, and Cal Ripken, Jr. Its mission is to assist professional athletes, sports industry professionals, and fans in becoming involved in charitable causes. Dunn was presented with the Bart Starr Award in 2009 in recognition of his extraordinary contributions both on and off the field. In 2011, he was also honoured with the Jefferson Award in the category of Outstanding Athlete in Service and Philanthropy.

Betty’s Hope was established by WDC in July of 2012. Betty Smothers, Dunn’s mother, inspired the creation of a mobile children’s grieving programme that aims to provide young people the tools they need to cope with the loss of a loved one in an atmosphere that is supportive so that they can heal and improve the quality of their lives. Through a mobile programming module that offers peer-group based grief support, community advocacy and awareness, parent/caregiver support, education and resources, and community support and training, Betty’s Hope, which has its headquarters in Baton Rouge, creates safe environments for support that are relevant, responsive, and fun. This is accomplished by providing community support and training. Warrick Dunn arrived at Florida State University as a competitor, a survivor, and one of the top ten high school football players in the state of Louisiana.

In 1993, the running back’s first season with the Seminoles, Florida State won its first National Championship, and he was named to the Freshman All-America team for his contributions to the team’s success. The native of Baton Rouge went on to become the first player in Florida State history to dash for 1,000 yards twice, was named a preseason Playboy All-American, and was named the most valuable player of the 1995 Sugar Bowl. Dunn continues to hold the all-time record for rushing yards in a career, which is close to 4,000. He is only the sixth football player in FSU history to have his jersey retired, and he did it this year. After having a phenomenal spring season with the Seminole track team, Dunn earned All-American honours in two different sports. Warrick was selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the first round of the draught.
