Vernon Sanders Law is a former Major League Baseball (MLB) pitcher who played for the Pittsburgh Pirates for sixteen seasons. From 1950 to 1967, he was a member of the New York Yankees. He was listed at 6’2″ (1.88 m) and 195 pounds, and he batted and threw right-handed (88 kg).
Before being promoted to the majors in 1950, Law played for three of the Pirates’ minor league affiliates before signing as an amateur free agent in 1948. Law was born on the 12th of March 1930 in Meridian, Idaho, to parents who were both lawyers.
Before the 1948 season, he was signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates and played in the minors in 1948 and 1949. In 1950, he debuted for the Pirates in the major leagues. He only played for the team for a single year before joining the military in 1951 and serving until 1954. Once back in the majors, he worked his way into the Pirates’ starting lineup.
A joint NL Player of the Month award (4-0, 1.94 ERA, 25 SO) was given to him and Willie McCovey in August of 1959. Law was ordained as a Deacon in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints when he was 12, a teacher two years later, and a priest when he was 17. Vance Law, his son, was a Major League Baseball player as well.
Career
He had a 20-9 win-loss record and an ERA of 3.08 in 1960. He was the National League’s leader in complete games that season, and he was selected to the all-star team and awarded the Cy Young Award. He helped the Pirates defeat the New York Yankees in two games of the 1960 World Series.
An ankle injury he suffered on the team bus trip after the 1960 pennant celebration ended his career. With his pitching style forced to change during the course of the season and World Series, Law pitched in agony. During the World Series, he tore muscles in the back of his pitching shoulder as a result of his shaky ankle.
In the winter he expected the injury to heal, but he wasn’t himself for several seasons after that. The 17-9 record and 2.15 ERA in 29 games earned him the NL Comeback Player of the Year award in 1965. In June of that year, he and Willie Stargell shared the NL Player of the Month award for their combined 6-1 record, 0.87 ERA, and 32 strikeouts.
In 1967, after two more seasons as a professional baseball player, he announced his retirement. Law had a 162-147 career record as a boxer. With his contributions on and off the field, he was honored with the Lou Gehrig Memorial Award in 1965. With the bat, Law hit.216 (191 for 883), scoring 96 runs, slugging 11 home runs, driving in 90 RBI, and stealing 41 bases.
He batted.333 (2-for-6) in the 1960 World Series with a run scored and an RBI. On the field, he had a.972 fielding percentage, 16 points better than the league average for a player of his position. After his retirement, Law spent two seasons as the Pirates’ pitching coach before joining the Brigham Young University staff as an assistant baseball coach, where he mentored future Hall of Famer Jack Morris.
The Seibu Lions of Nippon Professional Baseball hired him as their pitching coach in December 1978. (NPB). For the next three years, Law worked as a coach for the Portland Beavers of the Pacific Coast League before moving to the Denver Bears of the American Association, where he spent one season before taking over as manager in 1984. After a long midseason slump, Law was fired on July 3 and replaced by new coach Adrian Garrett, whose tenure was short-lived.
