Tyler, the Creator Biography and Wiki:
On March 6, 1991, Tyler, the Creator was given the name Tyler Gregory Okonma when he was born in Los Angeles, California. He spent his childhood in the Los Angeles neighborhoods of Ladera Heights and Hawthorne Heights with his mother. As he was growing up, Tyler, the Creator taught himself how to play the piano, and he also used to design his own album covers for albums that were already out there. His musical career got its start on the internet, and it was from there that it would eventually take off. His name originated from his Myspace site, which he created in the early aughts so that he could network with other musicians and share early versions of his songs. A venture into music by Okonma through the internet in 2007 would eventually result in the founding of the musical collective known as Odd Future, also known as Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All and OFWGKTA.
Members of the collective that have come and gone over the years include, in addition to Ozona, Hodgy Beats, Jasper Dolphin, Mike G, Left Brain, Domo Genesis, Matt Martians, Pyramid Vritra, Casey Veggies, Earl Sweatshirt, Syd tha Kid, Taco, and Frank Ocean, as well as a number of other individuals who have been associated with the group. In 2008, Odd Future presented the world with their debut mixtape. In 2011, their own record label, Odd Future Records, was created. In addition to their work in the music industry, the members of Odd Future have also launched their own clothing brand and starred in and executive produced their own comedic sketch show on AdultSwim called Loiter Squad, which ran for a total of three seasons. The lyrics of Odd Future’s songs have been criticized by some as being aggressive, misogynistic, and even homophobic at times. As a result, the band has stirred up controversy.
Their performances drew crowds that were prone to moshing, and members of Odd Future would frequently enter the melee themselves. Due to the group’s history of engaging in contentious behaviour, New Zealand issued an export restriction against Odd Future in 2014. In spite of their celebrity, members of Odd Future have produced successful solo work, such as Frank Ocean’s first album Channel Orange and Syd and Matt Martians founding the neo-soul group The Internet. Other examples include the album Channel Orange by Ocean, who is a member of Odd Future. Odd Future has not released anything collectively since 2016, which has led fans to consider the group’s inactivity as the group’s dissolution. Tyler, the Creator has maintained a solo career while also being a member of Odd Future.
While still a member of Odd Future, Tyler, the Creator recorded a number of critically acclaimed solo albums under his own name. His first piece of work was a mixtape titled Bastard, which was released in 2009. The mixtape was lauded by publications such as Pitchfork and led to a record deal. After that, in 2010, he issued the single “Yonkers,” and the following year, in 2011, he issued his debut studio album Goblin. Goblin featured appearances by members of Odd Future, and Okonma was mostly responsible for the album’s production. Bastard and Goblin’s work, much like that of Odd Future, has been criticized on numerous occasions. The lyrics from Bastard and Goblin were cited as the primary basis for the decision made in 2015 to prevent Tyler, the Creator from playing live events in the United Kingdom for a period of several years. After the release of Goblin, Okonma came under fire from other musicians working in the industry, who accused him of being homophobic and misogynistic. Despite this, the work was nonetheless lauded by the reviewers, and Goblin was included on a number of best-of lists at the end of the year.
After establishing a name for himself and cultivating a devoted fan base, Okonma continues to create music and take part in the fashion industry outside of Odd Future. In 2011, he established the clothing brand Golf Wang, which is known for making skateboards, sneakers, and clothes gear. His designs are influenced by hip hop culture, sneaker culture, and skater culture. It was in 2012 when he established the annual music festival known as Camp Flog Gnaw. Wolf was his third studio album, which he released in 2013, and it featured a number of his musical inspirations, including Erykah Badu and Pharell Williams, in addition to his Odd Future bandmates. Cherry Bomb, the follow-up album to Wolf, was released in 2015 and featured contributions by Williams in addition to other well-known musicians such as Lil Wayne, Kanye West, Charlie Wilson, and Schoolboy Q.
After going on a tour across the world in support of Cherry Bomb, Okonma delayed the release of Flower Boy until 2017. The album marked a departure in his work, which was noted for being brash and at times included dark humour, to work that was more personal to Okonma and included jazz influences. This shift was reflected in his work both before and after the release of the album. The film received accolades and admiration from critics and audiences all around the world. It peaked at position two on the Billboard 200 and garnered Okonma a nomination for a Grammy in the category of Best Rap Album. Okonma then published a project focused around the 2018 animated film Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch after he was invited to cover the song “You’re a Mean One Mr. Grinch” for the movie and its official soundtrack. He was riding high off the popularity of Flower Boy at the time of the release of the project.

The reception that IGOR received from both music publications and fans was very positive. It was also the first album by Okonma to enter the chart at number one on the Billboard 200. In 2020, IGOR was awarded the Grammy for Best Rap Album, which was Tyler, the Creator’s first Grammy win. He stated that he was “very grateful” for the win, but he also took the opportunity to express how it was also a “backhanded compliment” due to the Grammy’s exclusion of black artists from major categories and their relegation to the “rap” and “urban” categories, respectively.
