Toronto Maple Leafs Bio Data :

A Canadian professional ice hockey team headquartered in Toronto, the Toronto Maple Leafs compete in the National Hockey League’s Eastern Conference.  The franchise was established in the year 1926. (NHL). The Toronto Maple Leafs have one of the most historic histories in professional hockey, having won the Stanley Cup 13 times throughout their tenure in the league. The Toronto Maple Leafs were formed as one of the NHL’s founding clubs in 1917, making them one of the league’s founding franchises.

After being known as the Toronto Arenas for a short period of time, they were renamed the Toronto St. Patricks in 1919. For its efforts, the team was awarded two Stanley Cups (in 1917–18 and 1921–22 seasons, respectively) in the first five years of the NHL’s existence. Originally known as the Toronto Maple Leafs (often shortened to “the Leafs” by fans and the media), the franchise was purchased by Conn Smythe in 1927 and christened as such after the renowned hockey player.

With the help of the “Kid Line” of the Toronto Maple Leafs’ 1931–32 Stanley Cup-winning team, which included three future Hockey Hall of Fame members (Charlie Conacher, Busher Jackson, and Joe Primeau) who were all under 26 years old at the time of victory (Charlie Conacher, Busher Jackson, and Joe Primeau), the team won the Stanley Cup.

The Leafs made six appearances in the Stanley Cup finals between 1932–33 and 1939–40, but they were defeated on each occasion. Eventually, the club broke through and captured the championship in 1941–42, the first of five championships won under coach Hap Day, who had previously played for the team for 13 seasons prior to being the team’s head coach. It wasn’t until the addition of centre Ted Kennedy in 1942 that the Raptors were able to win the final four of Day’s titles, as well as a fifth in 1950–51.

After winning three straight Stanley Cups in the 1961–62 to 1963–64 seasons, an overhauled Toronto Maple Leaf’s team led by head coach Punch Imlach and packed with future Hall of Famers (right-wing and centre George Armstrong; goaltender Johnny Bower; centre Red Kelly; defenseman Tim Horton; left-wing Frank Mahovlich; left-wing Bob Pulford; and defenseman Allan Stanley) won another in 1966–67. Despite the All-Star efforts of centre Darryl Sittler and defenceman Börje Salming for the bulk of that decade, the Toronto Maple Leafs had their first long run of futility in the 1970s, when they failed to win a Stanley Cup for the first time in their franchise’s history.

After that, the team began to regress, finishing no better than third in its division and never making it past the second round of the playoffs between 1980 and 1990. After signing Mats Sundin, who would go on to become the Leafs’ all-time top scorer, in 1994, they went on to win their first division championship in 37 years during the 1999–2000 season. In Sundin’s 13 seasons in Toronto, the team failed to establish prolonged postseason success, with the team only making it as far as the conference finals on one occasion.

Despite leading the Boston Bruins 4–1 midway through the final period of the 2012–13 postseason, the Toronto Maple Leafs were unable to end their franchise-record seven-year postseason drought, further aggravating the plight of their beleaguered fan base by losing the deciding seventh game of their opening series in overtime. In the following season, a young Maple Leaf’s team surprised everyone by qualifying for the playoffs (albeit with a first-round loss to the top-seeded Washington Capitals in which five of the six games went into overtime).

This came just one season after the team had the worst record in the NHL (with a record of 31–38–5). (a season in which the franchise finished last in the league). In the following years, the Maple Leafs established themselves as a regular postseason fixture, despite the fact that they were never able to advance past the first round of the playoffs during that time.

While the team has struggled since then, the Maple Leafs have maintained a high level of attendance, which can be attributed to both the fervour of Toronto’s hockey supporters as well as the franchise’s long-standing series of rivalries with other teams in the league. In the sport of ice hockey, this rivalry with the Montreal Canadiens is often regarded as the strongest in the world. It is based on tensions between Quebec and Ontario (as well as between English- and French-speaking Canadians), and it is the most intense rivalry in the world.
