Tom DeLonge was a huge punk rock celebrity in the early 2000s as the singer/songwriter for the band blink-182. While blink was on sabbatical in the second half of the 2000s, he parlayed his popularity into the more ambitious Angels & Airwaves project, a band highly influenced by U2 and the Cure’s college rock sound.
Initially, he kept both blink-182 and Angels & Airwaves afloat with the help of his solo project To the Stars, but once the blink reunion fell through in 2015, he went solo with the help of his clearinghouse demo. While blink-182’s 1995 debut Cheshire Cat marked the beginning of Tom DeLonge’s solo career, his next album, To the Stars, came two decades later.
A Poway, California, native, DeLonge grew up with a passion for skateboarding and punk music, learning how to play the guitar while he was just a kid. After meeting drummer Scott Raynor and bassist Mark Hoppus in his late teens, he started a band with them, changing their name several times until settling on blink-182. In 1993, they recorded a demo called Flyswatter, then in 1994, they recorded Buddha, before signing with Cargo Records. With the help of rigorous touring and the 1995 release of their formal debut album Cheshire Cat, the band was able to sign with major-label MCA in 1996.
They made their major-label debut in 1997 with Dude Ranch, which had the single “Dammit,” as well as a stop on the first Warped Tour. Former Aquabats drummer Travis Barker took Raynor’s position after he departed the group in 1998.
Blink-182’s breakthrough album Enema of the State, with the singles “All the Small Things” and “What’s My Age Again?,” was recorded in 1999 with a brand-new lineup. blink-182 continued to be a dominant force in pop-punk for the next few years, thanks to the success of their 2001 album Take Off Your Pants & Jacket. DeLonge and Barker cut a side project called Box Car Racer in 2002, but Hoppus was absent.
This sparked conflict within the band. When the band’s third album, blink-182, was released in 2003, several of the band’s devotees were dissatisfied with its darker, more experimental sound. It became worse from there, as Travis Barker decided to film an MTV reality show called Keeping Up with the Barkers, and Tom DeLonge wanted to slow down their schedule so he could spend more time with his family. After all of this, blink decided to call it quits in 2005.
It was with the band Angels and Airwaves, an ambitious group influenced by the Cure and U2 of ’80s college music, that Tom DeLonge emerged in 2006. We Don’t Need to Whisper, A&A’s debut album, was out in 2006, and I-Empire, their follow-up, came out in 2007.
After Barker survived a plane crash the following year, DeLonge decided to bring blink-182 back together. Despite the fact that the band reunited for a full tour in 2009, Neighborhoods didn’t come out until 2011; throughout this period, DeLonge worked on the grandiose Love Album, Pts. 1 & 2 projects for A&A.
Despite a respectable but underwhelming performance, Neighborhoods parted ways with their big label — now Interscope following a number of corporate mergers — in October 2012. After releasing an independent EP titled Dogs Eating Dogs at the end of 2012, DeLonge returned to Angels & Airwaves and recorded the album The Dream Walker in 2014.
After that came another blink-182 album, but the band split up once more in early 2015, ending their career. In April of that year, DeLonge came back with his debut solo album, To the Stars, a collection of blink demos and A&A concepts.
