Tampa Bay Rays Bio Data :

Located in St. Petersburg, Florida, the Tampa Bay Rays are a professional baseball team in the American League. The Tampa Bay Rays are a member of the American League (AL) East division in Major League Baseball (MLB). For as long as the team has existed, Tropicana Field has served as its home ground. On March 9, 1995, and an ownership group led by Vince Naimoli was accepted after nearly three decades of unsuccessfully trying to secure an expansion franchise or entice existing clubs to relocate to the Tampa Bay area.

They debuted in the 1998 season of Major League Baseball. The first decade of play for the franchise was defined by futility; they finished last or second-to-last in the AL East in all but one season. When Stuart Sternberg purchased control of the franchise from Vince Naimoli two years earlier, he altered the team’s name from “Devil Rays” to “Rays,” which was supposed largely to represent a flash of sunshine, even though the team still wore a manta ray insignia on its sleeves.

Despite losing the World Series to the Philadelphia Phillies in the 2008 season, the Tampa Bay Rays had their first winning season, their first AL East championship, and their first American League pennant (beating the rival Boston Red Sox). With six playoff appearances since then, including a World Series loss to Los Angeles Dodgers, the Rays have remained one of baseball’s most successful teams. The Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees are the Rays’ main competitors. On the other hand, there have been a number of high-profile occurrences on the field. The Rays also face the Miami Marlins (formerly the Florida Marlins) in the Citrus Series, an intrastate interleague rivalry.

The Rays’ all-time record stands at 1,826–1,958 until 2021. (.483). The Yankees and Rays face each other on a regular basis as members of the AL East division. Due to the presence of the Yankees’ spring training facility in Tampa, as well as the Tampa Tarpons minor league team, there has always been a sense of competition between the two teams, especially among Yankee transplants. When Elliot Johnson and Francisco Cervelli collided at home plate in spring training in 2008, the rivalry between the Rays and Yankees became even more heated.

Mike Brosseau of the Tampa Bay Rays was hit by a 101mph fastball from Yankee closer Aroldis Chapman at Yankee Stadium in 2020, resulting in the dismissal of Rays manager Kevin Cash and the evacuation of the field. A three-game punishment was handed down to Chapman. The Rays possessed a “whole damn stable” of pitchers capable of throwing 98 mph, Cash claimed in response to the event. With Tampa Bay winning in five games that year, they’d finally face each other in a playoff match-up, with Brosseau hitting a home run off of Chapman to put Tampa Bay up in the eighth inning of Game 5 of the American League Division Series.

Since their inception in 1998, the Rays have played at Tropicana Field. The “Florida Suncoast Dome” was built in the late 1980s as a way to lure an MLB franchise to relocate or expand to the area. Tropicana Products, a company based in nearby Bradenton, purchased the naming rights to the dome after St. Petersburg was awarded an expansion franchise in 1995. After Stu Sternberg became the majority owner of the team in 2006 and 2007, Tropicana Field received more upgrades. Changes were mostly made to enhance the game-day experience for fans.

Most noticeable to players, in 2007, an entirely new Field Turf surface was installed, which was then replaced by a new AstroTurf for the following season. Since 2009, WDAE (620 AM) has served as the Rays radio network’s flagship station. Pregame and postgame host Neil Solondz is Dave Wills and Andy Freed, respectively. Rich Herrera hosted the Tampa Rays Baseball Radio Network’s pre-and post-game shows from 2005 through 2011. From 1998 through 2005, Paul Olden and Charlie Slowes were the original radio voice of the Devil Rays.

When Bob Sheppard stepped down as Yankee Stadium’s public address announcer, Slowes took over as primary announcer for the Washington Nationals, where he remains today.  WFLA 970 AM (1998–2004) and WHNZ 1250 AM (2005–2008) have previously broadcast Rays games. When the Rays signed a contract with Compass Media Networks in 2013, they became the second team in the league to have their games aired nationwide in a Game of the Week format. TJ Rives was the play-by-play announcer for the 2013 season, while Rob Dibble, Jeff Nelson, and Steve Phillips served as analysts.

For the 2013 season, Compass Media produced 22 Rays games nationally. The Rays’ television broadcasters are Dewayne Staats (play-by-play) and Brian Anderson (color commentary). Staats and Joe Magrane worked together on the Rays’ TV broadcasts for the first 11 seasons of the franchise. After the end of the 2008 season, Magrane resigned to join the MLB Network.” While MLB manager Kevin Kennedy was the lead color commentator in 2009 and 2010, Brian Anderson filled in on a few road trips before taking over as the show’s regular color commentator in 2011 and continuing to this day.
