St. Louis Blues Bio Data :

A professional ice hockey team headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri, that competes in the Western Conference of the National Hockey League. The St. Louis Blues are a member of the National Hockey League (NHL). There have been four Stanley Cup final appearances for the Blues (1968–70 and 2019), and they have won one championship (2019). It was during the 1967–68 season that the Blues (whose name is derived from the classic tune “St. Louis Blues” by singer W.C. Handy) became one of the six clubs admitted to the NHL when the league expanded from the so-called “Original Six” franchises.

The St. Louis Blues, led by first-year head coach Scotty Bowman and featured hard-nosed defenseman Barclay Plager, progressed to the Stanley Cup finals in their debut season but were defeated by the Montreal Canadiens in four games that were all decided by a goal or less. The Blues won the NHL West Division (which included the six expansion franchises) in each of the following two seasons as well, only to be swept in the Stanley Cup finals by the champion of the East Division, which included the Original Six franchises (Montreal again in 1969, the Boston Bruins in 1970). The team’s rapid rise to prominence, however, was not sustained, and the Blues were significantly less successful during the 1970s. Between 1970–71 and 1979–80, St. Louis had only two winning seasons and only made it past the first round of the playoffs on one of those occasions.

After winning 45 games and winning the division title in 1980–81, the Blues were defeated in the second round of the playoffs, despite the efforts of left-wing Brian Sutter and center Bernie Federko. This was the greatest record in team history up to that moment. A losing record was achieved six times in the next eight seasons, but the Blues nevertheless qualified for the postseason in each of those seasons. During the 1987–88 season, the St. Louis Blues acquired Brett Hull, who would go on to become a famous right-wing.

The Blues finished with the best record in the NHL in 1999–2000, thanks to the efforts of right-wing Pavol Demitra and defensemen Chris Pronger and Al MacInnis. However, the Blues were eliminated from the NHL playoffs in the first round by the San Jose Sharks, who were seeded last in the Western Conference that year. They bounced back the next season, earning a spot in the conference finals, where they fell to the eventual champion Colorado Avalanche in a seven-game thriller.

With a third consecutive playoffs appearance in 2003–04, St. Louis extended its string of consecutive postseason appearances to 25 seasons, which was the third-longest such stretch in league history at the time. During that time period, though, the Blues failed to qualify for the Stanley Cup finals and only moved past the second round of the playoffs on two occasions. The Blues finished their seasons with win-loss records around.500 in the six seasons after the end of the streak, although they only made it to the postseason once (losing in the first round of the 2008–09 playoffs).

Head coach Ken Hitchcock joined the struggling Blues after only fourteen games of the 2011-12 campaign. Under his guidance, the Blues went on a 49-game winning streak and captured the franchise’s first division title in 14 years. However, postseason success remained elusive for the Blues, as they were eliminated in the second round of the playoffs that season, and were then eliminated in the first round of the playoffs in each of the following three seasons.

To some extent, the Blues had a breakthrough during the 2015–16 season, getting to their first conference final in 14 years, before being eliminated by the San Jose Sharks. While playing in the 2018–19 season, the St. Louis Blues ended a nearly half-century-long Stanley Cup finals drought in a fairytale manner. St. Louis began the season with the worst record in the NHL, but the team rallied behind interim head coach Craig Berube, a tenacious defense, and stellar play from rookie goaltender Jordan Binnington to finish second in their division at the end of the season. St. Louis finished the season in second place in their division.

As a result, the team won three tightly contested postseason series, none of which lasted less than six games, and advanced to the Stanley Cup finals for the first time in 49 years. While there, the Blues defeated the Boston Bruins in a seven-game series to win their first title in franchise history. The Blues qualified for the playoffs in both of the following seasons, which were cut short by the COVID-19 epidemic. However, they were eliminated in the first round in both of those seasons.
