The team participates in Major League Soccer (MLS) as a member of the Western Conference, having moved back to the Western Conference in 2015 after spending ten seasons in the Eastern Conference. Sporting KC first appeared on the field in 1996 as a charter member of the league, which was then known as the Kansas City Wiz.
