Shaggy Bio Data :
Shaggy was born in Kingston, Jamaica, on October 22, 1968. In 1987, he began taking singing lessons, and a year later, while singing in the streets with friends, he was spotted. Richard O’Neil Burrell’s uncle, Robb Banks, is a rapper.
Shaggy wanted to pursue a career in music, and his first single, “Oh Carolina,” was a dancehall remake of a ska hit by the Folkes Brothers that was used in the film Sliver in 1993. Shaggy made an appearance on Kenny Dope’s hip hop album The Unreleased Project the same year. On a remake of his Maxi-Single called “Nice and Lovely,” he collaborated with producers such as Sting International, Don One, Lloyd ‘Spiderman’ Campbell, Robert Livingston, and Frankie Cutlass. He went on to have more major hits, including “Boombastic” in 1995, which became the theme song for a successful Levi’s advert, and “That Girl” in 1996, which he co-wrote with Maxi Priest. Shaggy was dumped by Virgin in 1999, believing he was unlikely to get another hit single like 1995’s “Boombastic.” The next year, he would sign with Dreamworks and release the album Hot Shot. “It Wasn’t Me” and “Angel,” the latter of which was based around two music samples – Merrilee Rush’s 1968 hit “Angel of the Morning” (which was remade in 1981 by Juice Newton) and The Steve Miller Band’s 1973 hit “The Joker.” Both singles charted at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 and enjoyed similar popularity around the world, reaching number one in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Scotland, and France, among other countries.
His 2002 album Lucky Day and his 2005 album Clothes Drop, however, struggled to equal Hot Shot’s popularity, though Lucky Day did go gold. The songs, on the other hand, became a hit in Europe, with the song “Hey Sexy Lady” receiving a lot of airplay. On the soundtrack, Shaggy remade the Scooby-Doo theme tune, “Shaggy, Where Are You?” Shaggy also composed the soundtrack for the 2002 film Showtime. “Angel,” from Shaggy’s album Hot Shot, was his last top 40 hit in the United States. Shaggy and Ali G released “Me Julie” from the Ali G Indahouse soundtrack on March 11, 2002. According to the Official Charts Company, the album sold 300,000 copies in the United Kingdom. It took 14 days to complete. In an interview with the Daily Star in January 2020, Shaggy revealed that some of Rihanna’s agents had approached him to work on a song for her ninth album. He declined the offer when he was invited to audition, claiming that he would “leave that to the younger men.” Shaggy later claimed in another interview that his words were not intended to be offensive. Despite declining the project, he expressed confidence in its outcome, saying, “From what I hear, it should be fine.” Shaggy announced a revised version of his 2000 album Hot Shot, renamed Hot Shot 2020, in April 2020, to commemorate the album’s 20th anniversary.
