In an interview with SATA, Boynton stated that he didn’t mean it as a compliment. While still a post-graduate student at acting school, Boynton began designing greeting cards, eventually selling 10,000 of them to craft shops on the East Coast, all of which she had printed herself. .

The rest is history in the industry: Buyers and recipients alike were fascinated by Boynton’s off-the-wall sense of humour, which drew males into the market for the first time as significant customers of greeting cards. Soon, her furry buddies began to appear on everything from calendars to posters to stationery to T-shirts. Hipos Go Berserk’ is Boynton’s debut children’s book, and it is a graphically bright counting book in which Boynton demonstrates his ability to write in rhyme.

This was coined by a contributor to the Wilson Library Bulletin Although it’s a small and unassuming book, it’s an exceptional one in terms of overall unity, not to mention its warmth and whimsicality. The overall impact is one of lightness, airiness, and tenderness. When it comes to her picture book If at First. she bases her story on the old saying, If at first you don’t succeed, try again. This proverb is illustrated by the story of a little mouse who feverishly tries to push a pretty enormous purple elephant up a hill, but is unsuccessful. The mouse attempts various techniques of enticing the disinterested elephant, including leading it with a peanut, tempting it with a peanut, yelling at it, and screaming at it.

When Boynton first arrived at Yale University in 1970, she intended to study in art, but she soon found herself captivated to courses in English. She attended a seminar on writing and illustrating for children taught by the renowned author/illustrator Maurice Sendak while studying at Yale. Boynton, on the other hand, was not yet persuaded that she wanted to pursue a career as an illustrator. At the conclusion of her undergraduate studies, she aspired to pursue a career as a theatre director, enrolling first at the University of California at Berkeley and subsequently returning to Yale for a doctoral study in drama.

Sandra Boynton Career

During the summer of 1973, when in desperate need of spending money for college, Boynton embarked on her first business venture: greeting cards. Boynton’s uncle printed the cards, a total of 60,000 in all, all of which were sketched, hand–colored, and wrapped by Boynton. She did all of the distribution herself, visiting artisan shops all throughout the East Coast. More than 100 merchants accepted her cards, with only three refusing to do business with her. According to Paula Span of the Washington Post, she said, I can’t believe they sold. By the next summer, she had earned between $3,000 and $4,000 as a result of her entrepreneurial endeavor. Boynton’s next step was to go to a trade fair in New York City in the hopes of meeting a marketer who could help him.

In attendance at the event, she was impressed with the work of Recycled Paper Products, a company that is committed to environmental responsibility and is headed by two recent college graduates. Eventually, a settlement was reached in which Boynton received royalties rights as well as practically entire control over her property and its promotion. Boynton would create two card lines for Recycled Paper Products: Animal Farm and Culture Kards, both of which would be marketed by the company. Boynton’s cards were popular with a wide range of people because of their humorous word play and disarming animal pictures.

One of her most popular goods was a birthday card that illustrated a zoo of animals with the words Hippo Birdie Two Ewe. It was one of her most popular items. A thank–you card depicted two pigs in a bathtub, with the phrase “Thank you for everything. This isn’t your typical nonsense. Thank you very much.” Boynton placed a high value on making her cards feel personalized. As she explained to Victoria Irwin of the Christian Science Monitor, When you get a card that says Just for you. it appears to be incredibly impersonal. The cards I’m sending out are truly from me to someone.  Early in her career, Boynton still considered the greeting cards to be a side project that helped her pay for graduate school and other expenses.
