San Francisco Giants Bio Data :

San Francisco Giants, San Francisco-based American baseball franchise. The Giants have won eight World Series and 23 NL pennants. The Giants were founded in 1883 in New York City as the Gothams. In 1885, the team has renamed the Giants, based on their proud manager’s description after an extra-inning triumph. The Giants won their first pennant and an unofficial World Series against the American Association winners in 1888, and they repeated as NL champions the following year. With the Brooklyn Bridegrooms (later Dodgers, now the Los Angeles Dodgers) joining the NL in 1890, a famous rivalry with the Giants started that continues to this day.

The Giants fell out of contention quickly and only returned to the top of the NL after hiring manager John McGraw in mid-season 1902. Because McGraw refused to play the champion of the purportedly lesser American League, the fledgling formal World Series was not held in 1904. So they agreed to participate in the World Series, which they won in five games behind future Hall of Famers Christy Mathewson and Joe McGinnity, who allowed no earned runs in the series. Between 1911 and 1917, McGraw led the Giants to four World Series appearances, all losses. The Giants won the World Series in 1921 and again in 1922.

A trio of future Hall of Famers joined the Giants in the 1920s: Bill Terry, Mel Ott, and Carl Hubbell. McGraw retired mid-season in 1932, and Terry took over as player-manager until 1936, then manager until 1941. Terry led the Giants to a World Series victory in his first full season, but they lost to the powerful New York Yankees in 1936 and 1937. The Giants never finished third in the NL in the 1940s. During the 1948 season, the franchise hired manager Leo Durocher from the Dodgers.

His investment led to World Series appearances in 1951 and 1954, with the Giants prevailing in 1954. Those two postseason visits also featured two of baseball’s greatest plays: Bobby Thomson’s dramatic pennant-winning home run in 1951 and Willie Mays’ famous over-the-shoulder catch in the 1954 World Series. With the Giants still being in the shadow of the Yankees, attendance at their now-legendary home, the Polo Grounds, dwindled.

They moved to San Francisco in 1958, at the same time as Brooklyn’s Brooklyn Dodgers did. The San Francisco Giants had a number of popular young players who drew large crowds to their new ballpark, Candlestick Park. The Giants’ lineup included first basemen/outfielders Orlando Cepeda and Willie McCovey, as well as pitcher Juan Marichal. Despite this excellent roster, the Giants only reached one World Series (a loss in 1962) in their first 29 years in the Bay Area.

The Giants’ return to the World Series in 1989 was notable for a 7.1-magnitude earthquake that shook the Bay Area soon before game three of the series was due to begin. The fact that numerous television stations were streaming live from Candlestick Park before the game added to the drama of the occasion. Barry Bonds, whose father Bobby played outfield for the Giants in the late 1960s and early 1970s, joined the team in 1993 and began an assault on baseball’s record books. In 2002, he guided the Giants to the World Series, where they were defeated by the Anaheim Angels in a dramatic seven-game series.

But by 2007, steroid charges had overshadowed Bond’s accomplishments, and a rebuilding Giants organization had cut him loose. The Giants made the playoffs for the first time since 2003 in 2010 thanks to a strong pitching staff headed by Tim Lincecum.

The squad went on to win the World Series in five games against the Texas Rangers, the franchise’s first since moving to California. In 2012, the Giants won six elimination games in the playoffs to overcome 2–0 and 3–1 series deficits in the division and championship rounds, respectively and defeated the Detroit Tigers in four games in the World Series.

The Giants won 18 fewer games in 2013 than in 2012 and concluded the year with a losing record. The Giants bounced back in 2014, winning 88 games to qualify for the NL Wild Card, and only losing twice in the postseason to reach the World Series. The team won a seven-game series against the Kansas City Royals, led by ace Madison Bumgarner, who won both of his starts and came out of the bullpen to pitch five scoreless innings to secure the title.

After making the playoffs in 2016, but losing in the division series, the Giants had the poorest record in the NL in 2017. After several disappointing seasons, the 49ers stunned everyone in 2021 by winning 107 games, a franchise, and a league record. The Giants made the playoffs for the first time in five years but were defeated by the Dodgers in the division series.
