The San Diego Padres are a professional baseball team headquartered in San Diego, California, that competes in the National League (National League) (NL). The Padres were created in 1969 and have won two National League pennants in their history (1984 and 1998). The franchise was founded in 1969, along with three other expansion teams, as part of the expansion draught.
As a result of their 110-game losing streak in their inaugural season, the Padres finished last in their division and tied with the Montreal Expos for the worst record in the major leagues. They finished last in the National League West for the next five seasons, and the team was on the verge of being relocated to Washington, D.C., but McDonald’s Corporation magnate Ray Kroc purchased the franchise in 1974 and committed to keeping it in San Diego.
The Padres had their first winning season in 1978, thanks to the efforts of future Hall of Famers Dave Winfield and Gaylord Perry, the latter of whom was awarded the National League Cy Young Award for excellent pitching in 1978 (at the age of 39) for his efforts. The Padres’ winning streak, however, was short-lived, as they went on to post losing records in each of the following three seasons.
When the San Diego Padres won their first division title in 1984, they followed it up with a five-game triumph over the Chicago Cubs in the National League Championship Series (NLCS) to earn their first World Series berth, Gwynn was a key member of the team. The Padres went off against a Detroit Tigers team that was one of the most dominant teams in baseball history in the World Series, and San Diego was defeated in five games. After a disappointing regular season in which they went 114 games without losing (an American League record at the time), the Padres were dealt a second blow in the World Series, this time by the New York Yankees, who swept the Padres. The Padres won the first of two consecutive division titles in 2005 and 2006, led by the pitching of starter Jake Peavy and reliever Trevor Hoffman (who went on to become the league’s all-time saves leader in 2006), but each postseason appearance ended in a loss in the first round of the playoffs in each of those seasons. When Bochy left the Padres after the 2006 season to take over as manager of the division rival San Francisco Giants (with whom he would go on to win three World Series titles), the Padres were in the midst of a rebuilding effort.
