Sacramento Kings Bio Data :

The Sacramento Kings are an American professional basketball team based in Sacramento, California, in the National Basketball Association (NBA). It is the Western Conference that the Kings play in (NBA). The Rochester Royals of New York won an NBA championship in 1951, the year in which the franchise was established. In 1945, the National Basketball Association’s Rochester Royals club was founded in Rochester, New York (NBL).

As soon as they were in the National Basketball League in 1945–46, the team won their first championship and made it to the NBL finals in each of their next two seasons. During the 1948–49 season, the team was a member of the Basketball Association of America (BAA) then transferred to the National Basketball Association (NBA) before the next season when the BAA and the NBL merged.

A seven-game series victory over the New York Knicks in 1950–51 led to the Royals winning the NBA championship by defeating the Knicks in the playoffs, led by guards Bob Davies and Bobby Wanzer and center Arnie Risen. In spite of a superb roster, the Royals were unable to win another championship, but they were among the best teams in the early NBA, reaching the division finals three times between 1949–50 and 1953–54, which is similar to the modern NBA’s conference finals.

Basketball, the only major team sport with a U.S. origin, has become a global phenomenon. Learn about basketball’s intriguing history and facts using Britannica, which lets you dribble across time. The 1954–55 season was the first time in Royals history that the team finished with a losing record, and the rest of the decade saw the team finish with a losing record.

As the Royals’ squad was bolstered by rising players like forwards Jack Twyman and Maurice Stokes, hundreds of thousands of dollars were raised (their continuing relationship, especially after Stokes became handicapped, is one of the most compelling stories in professional sports).

Cincinnati, Ohio, was a much larger city when the Royals relocated there in 1957, and center-forward Wayne Embry was added to their roster the following year. Royals acquired Oscar Robertson from the University of Cincinnati in 1960 as the consequence of a territorial acquisition (from 1947 to 1965 the NBA allowed teams to forfeit their first-round draught choice to select, prior to the regular draft, a college player from the immediate area).

Two times in 1962–63 and 1963–64, the “Big O” led the Royals to the division finals, where they lost both times to the eventual champion Boston Celtics. With Jerry Lucas’ arrival in 1963, the team’s first postseason participation in the 1960s, the team failed to advance past the first round of play-offs in any of the team’s three previous attempts in the postseason during the 1960s.

From 1969 through 1973 the Royals were coached by Bob Cousy and sold to a group of Kansas City-based investors in 1971. Renamed the Kings after one final season in Cincinnati, the franchise was relocated to Kansas City in 1972–73 and renamed in order to avoid confusion with the local Major League Baseball team. The Kansas City–Omaha Kings were the team’s moniker during the first three seasons following its movement when it played home games in both Kansas City and Omaha (Nebraska).

Nate “Tiny” Archibald was an all-star guard for the team’s 13-year stay in Kansas City, but the team was mediocre during this period, making the playoffs just five times and advancing past the first round of the playoffs only once, a remarkable run to the 1981 conference finals following a 40–42 regular season. However, despite Nate (“Tiny”) Archibald’s involvement at the start of the team’s history, The Sacramento Kings were purchased by a second out-of-state ownership group in 1983, and the franchise relocated to Sacramento in 1985 following two unsuccessful seasons in Kansas City.

Although all-star shooting guard Mitch Richmond led the Kings to a losing record in each of their first 13 seasons in Sacramento, they ended in last or second-to-last place ten times during that time. As a result of the Kings’ first-ever playoff appearance in the 1998–99 season, which marked the beginning of an eight-year streak of playoffs appearances, Chris Webber and Peja Stojakovic led the team to the NBA Finals in 2001–02, where they were defeated by the Los Angeles Lakers in a thrilling seven-game series after a record-setting season. It has been a long time since the Sacramento Kings have qualified for the playoffs, and the team has been known more for its management and off-court turmoil than for its on-court prowess.
