Portland Timbers Bio Data :

Located in Portland, Oregon, the Portland Timbers are an American professional soccer team. Major League Soccer’s Western Conference includes the Portland Timbers as a member club. Portland Timbers home games have been held at Providence Park since the team was established as an expansion franchise in 2011.

Portland was awarded an expansion berth to Major League Soccer in 2009, and the team was formed that year. Majority ownership of Peregrine Sports is held by Merritt Paulson, whose firms purchased the then-USL Pro franchise in 2007 and formed the Portland Thorn women’s soccer team in 2012, which is now owned by the Paulson family.

Founded in 1975, the club is the fourth Portland-based soccer franchise to bear the Timbers moniker, following the previous team’s departure from the North American Soccer League. In 2013, the Timbers won the Western Conference regular-season title and qualified for the CONCACAF Champions League for the first time.

Cascadia’s first major trophy, the MLS Cup, was won by the franchise in 2015, becoming them the first Cascadia team to achieve so. The team won the Western Conference regular-season championship in 2017 as well. The Portland Timbers made it to the MLS Cup in 2018, where they fell 2–0 to Atlanta United FC in the finals of the playoffs after eliminating archrival Seattle in the semi-finals. MLS is Back, a one-time tournament, was won by the Timbers in 2020, and they advanced to the Champions League once again.

Portland has a long-standing rivalry with Seattle Sounders FC and Vancouver Whitecaps FC, with whom they compete in the Cascadia Cup, a regional competition. Famed as the “Timbers Army,” they are known for their steadfast fans. The Portland Timbers and the Portland Thorns of the NWSL share Providence Park in downtown Portland, where they play their home matches.

The Multnomah Athletic Club, which built Providence Park in 1926 and still has a southern border on the stadium, has owned the land since 1893 and has used it as a stadium since 1926. Major League Soccer’s Providence Park is the oldest soccer-specific stadium in the league and one of the most historic venues in the United States for professional soccer.

In the Cascadia Cup, the Portland Timbers, Seattle Sounders, and Vancouver Whitecaps compete against each other for a trophy and a championship. During the original NASL in the 1970s, Portland, Seattle, and Vancouver were fierce rivals, and all three were in the USL from 2001 to 2008. The Cascadia Cup, an annual trophy awarded to the club with the greatest overall head-to-head record between the three Pacific Northwest teams, was founded in 2004 by supporters of the three clubs.

In 2011, the Cup was relocated to the Major League Soccer (MLS) to honor the return of all three teams to the same league. For the last four years in a row, Portland has won the Cup. In 2015, Portland became the first Cascadia-based team to win the MLS Cup. It was Timber Jim the lumberjack who served as the team mascot during its time in the NASL and USL. Jim announced his retirement on January 24, 2008. The Timbers’ 1–0 victory over the Puerto Rico Islanders on April 17, 2008, served as his farewell game.

Timber Joey has been the Timbers’ unofficial mascot since then and was formally launched as the team’s official mascot during an exhibition game against Juventus Primavera on June 14, 2008, which the Timbers won 1–0. A chainsaw-wielding Joey follows Jim’s tradition of cutting around (or “cookie”) from an enormous log every time the Timbers score. After the game, the goal-scorer receives this round. A round is awarded to the goalkeeper if his or her team manages a shutout.

Timber Joey wears a special jersey sponsored by Leatherman, a Portland-based maker of outdoor tools. Root Sports Northwest broadcasts regular-season games that are not broadcasted by Major League Soccer’s national television partners. Fox affiliate KPTV (channel 12) or its co-owned MyNetworkTV station KPDX (channel 49) broadcast English-language games, while Estrella TV affiliate KGW-DT3 broadcasts Spanish-language games (channel 8.3).

The Portland Timbers Broadcast Network (PTBN) was formed in 2012 to distribute the team’s over-the-air game coverage to more markets. NBC station KTVZ (channel 21.2) in Bend, Fox affiliate KEVU (channel 23) in Eugene, and MyNetworkTV affiliate KFBI-LD (channel 48) in Medford is the network’s affiliates in Oregon. On Friday nights, Timbers in 30 is aired on KPTV, which also airs a weekly highlight show. Both KWBY (940 AM) and KSND (930 AM) are simulcasting all Timbers games in Spanish on KXL (750 AM, “The Game”) (95.1 FM, “Recuerdo 95.1”). Talk Timbers, a weekly soccer-themed radio show on KXL, is also carried.
