The Pittsburgh Pirates are a National League baseball team with their home base in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. They are owned by the Pittsburgh Steelers, who are the team’s primary sponsor. The Pittsburgh Steelers are the team’s majority owner. Known as the “Bucs” by their fans, the Pittsburgh Pirates are one of the league’s oldest baseball clubs, having won the World Series five times during their long history (1909, 1925, 1960, 1971, and 1979). A team called the Pittsburgh Alleghenys was formed in 1882 and competed in the American Association before shifting to the National League (NL) in 1887 and being renamed the Pirates.
The Pirates won their first World Series in 1903 and won their second World Series in 1904. In order to get an advantage in the competition, the Alleghenys used “piratical” techniques, according to league officials, to kidnap talented players from their opponents. The team embraced the moniker and formally adopted the name Pirates in 1891, which is still in use to this day. Honus Wagner, a shortstop from the Pittsburgh region who played for the Pirates from 1900 to 1917, established himself as one of the team’s early standouts throughout his time with the organization.
From 1900 through 1917, he was a part of the Pittsburgh Pirates’ roster of players. During the turn of the twentieth century, Wagner guided the Pittsburgh Pirates to three straight American League pennants and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame as a member of the first class of players to do so. Additionally, he led the Pittsburgh Pirates to the inaugural World Series, where they were defeated by the Boston Red Sox in eight games.
Wagner passed away on November 30, 2003, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. When the Pittsburgh Pirates captured their first World Series title in 1909, they were in a state of turmoil for the next decade, before returning to the World Series in 1925, where they defeated the Washington Senators. In 1927, the New York Yankees were eliminated from the World Series by a formidable team led by superstars Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. It was the team’s second participation in the postseason and their first loss.
Despite this, the Pittsburgh Pirates, headed by future Hall of Famer Roberto Clemente, won the 1960 World Series in dramatic fashion, when Bill Mazeroski’s game-winning home run in the ninth inning of the seventh game drove them to the championship in a spectacular fashion. While playing at Forbes Field for more than 60 years, the Pirates made the move to Three Rivers Stadium in the 1970s, when the power-hitting of Willie Stargell and Dave Parker helped them win the National League Eastern Division six times and the World Series in 1971 and 1979, among other honors. The Pirates acquired sluggers Barry Bonds and Bobby Bonilla in the mid-1980s, and the team went on to finish first in the National League Eastern Division for three consecutive seasons (1990–92) after acquiring them. During each of those seasons, however, the club was unable to proceed to the World Series finals.
As a free agent following the 1992 season, Bonds joined the San Francisco Giants, where he played for the next three seasons. After bonding with the Pirates (who moved to PNC Park in 2001), the team quickly fell to the bottom of the National League, and he was traded to the San Francisco Giants in 2003. During the 2009 season, the Pittsburgh Pirates tied an existing record for the most consecutive losing seasons for a professional franchise in any of the four major North American sports leagues by posting their 17th consecutive losing season, breaking the previous mark by one game.
A win in the one-game Wild Card playoff qualified the Buccaneers for the postseason, but they were knocked out of the postseason by the Cardinals in the National League Division Series. The Buccaneers finished with a 94-win season in 2013, with Andrew McCutchen as the National League Most Valuable Player. The following season, Cleveland defeated Pittsburgh in the Wild Card Game, allowing the Steelers to return to the postseason for the second time in three years.
Despite having their best season since the Bonds era and the second-most wins in the major leagues that year, the Pirates were relegated to the Wild Card game due to their proximity to the 100-win St. Louis Cardinals, and the Buccaneers were defeated in a one-game playoff for the second year in a row, as they had been in 2014, by the Cardinals. Although the Pittsburgh Steelers finished the season with a losing record, the team was unable to extend its three-year postseason streak in 2016. However, despite their best efforts, the Pirates were unable to improve on their season-ending record of 101 losses.
