Philadelphia Union Bio Data :

American professional soccer team, the Philadelphia Union is situated in the Philadelphia metropolitan area. A member of the Eastern Conference in Major League Soccer (MLS), the Union play their home games at PPL Park. When the club was founded on February 28, 2008, it was an expansion team. It is located in Chester, Pennsylvania, on the banks of the Delaware River, and Subaru Park is its home ground.

As of right now, the Union is owned by Keystone Sports & Entertainment, with Jay Sugarman serving as its majority owner and chairman. Besides being a professional basketball player, Kevin Durant is also a minority owner. Jim Curtin is now the team’s head coach. Since 2014, Curtin has been the Union’s head coach. The Union finished second in the U.S. Open Cup in 2014, 2015, and 2018. Despite a 1-1 draw in regulation time in 2014, the team fell to Seattle Sounders FC 3–1 in extra time and Sporting Kansas City 6–7 in penalties in 2015.

Los Angeles Galaxy was beaten 3–0 by the Houston Dynamo in 2018 final. For the first time, Philadelphia won the Supporter’s Shield in 2020, making it the team’s first championship. Even though Philadelphia is one of the country’s top five media markets and one of the country’s top ten metropolitan regions, it was not included in the inaugural season of Major League Soccer in 1996.

In 2001, a group of investors attempted to establish an MLS club in Trenton, New Jersey, the first attempt to introduce soccer to the Delaware Valley. New Jersey’s River Line, which has yet to be completed, will be a direct link to the new $31 million soccer-specific stadia that will be erected across the street. The Trenton MLS team would have been referred to as “Union FC” if it had been successful. MetroStars (now New York Red Bulls) had a right to prevent a Trenton franchise since it would infringe on their 75-mile “competition-free zone.”

New Jersey college Rowan University was planning to build a new stadium on its campus in Glassboro, New Jersey, five years later. Rowan’s football team and an MLS expansion team would share the venue. In the end, New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine decided to drop $100 million in state bonds to pay the stadium and other Rowan campus renovations. While Keystone Sports & Entertainment (the firm that would eventually acquire the Union) looked at a site under Chester’s Commodore Barry Bridge, Rowan’s plan to build a soccer-specific stadium fell through.

This year’s SuperDraft yielded three players for the Union, including Zac MacMath, who was selected fifth overall. The Union signed a deal with Bimbo Bakeries USA on January 11, 2011. Two new players were added to Philadelphia’s roster on January 20: Colombian goalkeeper Faryd Mondragón (GK) and goalkeeper Carlos Valdés (C) (D). Former 1. FC Köln player Juan Mondragón has at least 50 Colombian national team appearances under his belt. Prior to joining the Philadelphia Flyers, Valdés was the captain of Independiente Santa Fe in Colombia’s First Division. Freddy Adu was also signed by the Union during the summer transfer window.

In the 2011 season, the squad finished 3rd in the Eastern Conference and 8th overall in the league with a record of 11–8–15 (W-L-T) with 44 goals scored and 36 allowed. The Philadelphia Union qualified for the MLS Cup Playoffs for the first time this season. With four wins and one loss in their first six league games, the Union made an impressive start to the season. MLS Cup Playoffs 2011: The Union was defeated 2–1 at home by the Eastern Conference Semifinals on October 30, 2011, with Sebastien Le Toux scoring the first playoff goal for the Union.

The second leg ended in a 1–0 defeat for the Union against the Houston Dynamo on November 3, 2011. May 11, 2009, Philadelphia City Hall had an official unveiling of the Philadelphia Union’s name, crest, and colors. As the original capital of the Thirteen Colonies, Philadelphia has long been associated with the labor movement. Fans had the opportunity to vote on the name between January 19, 2009, and February 6, 2009, with the other three alternatives being AC Philadelphia, SC Philadelphia, and Philadelphia City. The name was picked following the vote.

The principal colors of the Continental Army’s uniforms during the American Revolutionary War are navy blue and gold. The circular crest of the squad represents the team’s oneness. Philadelphia’s coat of arms inspired the shape of the shield’s thirteen gold stars, which commemorate the original thirteen colonies. As a nod to Benjamin Franklin’s “Join, or Die” political cartoon featured in the Pennsylvania Gazette in 1754, as well as the Gadsden flag, the rattlesnake evokes both symbols.

Using the Philadelphia civic flag as inspiration, the light blue in the crest is a nod to the Sons of Ben. Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware’s state flags all have navy blue, gold, and light blue as the primary colors. In addition to the blue shield with the rattlesnake, the team’s secondary logo features a gold border and a ribbon bearing the team’s official motto: “jungite aut permit,” a Latin translation of the phrase “join or die,” which was also used in the above-mentioned 1754 Benjamin Franklin political cartoon.

To commemorate the role Pennsylvania played in the Civil War, the Philadelphia Union has adopted a name and color scheme that reflects this. Chester, Pennsylvania is home to the Philadelphia Union’s training facilities. Two grass fields were added to the training facility in the fall of 2014. The Union used to practice at Chester Park, a nearby municipal park, or immediately at Subaru Park prior to having dedicated training fields.
