The New York Rangers are a professional ice hockey team headquartered in New York City that competes in the NHL. The New York Rangers are a member of the National Hockey League (NHL) and compete in the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference. They are one of the league’s oldest franchises. The team was named “Tex’s Rangers” (a play on the phrase “Texas Rangers”) after Tex Rickard, who founded it in New York in 1926 as an expansion franchise. The name was given to the team by the New York newspapers, which dubbed it “Tex’s Rangers” (a play on the phrase “Texas Rangers”).
The New York Rangers have played their home games in Madison Square Garden (a new arena with the same name that opened in 1968) since the team’s inception. They were one of the “Original Six,” which included the Montreal Canadiens, Toronto Maple Leafs, Boston Bruins, Detroit Red Wings, and Chicago Blackhawks. The NHL was founded in 1942, and the Rangers were one of the teams that comprised it until the league’s expansion in 1967.

After finishing first in its division in its first season, the Rangers went on to win the Stanley Cup in their second season (1927–28), defeating the Montreal Maroons in a series in which coach (and former defenseman) Patrick took over as goalie midway through Game 2 after Chabot suffered an eye injury; the Rangers were thus the first team based in the United States to win the Stanley Cup in the NHL’s history. By 1940, they would have advanced to the Stanley Cup finals four more times, winning it twice (1933, 1940).
Between 1940 and 1960, the team had less success, regularly finishing last in the six-team league and missing the playoffs despite the fact that four of the six teams qualified for the playoffs each year during that time period. It was in the late 1960s that the team began to see a comeback and began making regular appearances in the postseason. The Rangers reached it to the Stanley Cup finals twice, in 1971–72 and 1978–79, but they were defeated both times (in six games to the Bruins in 1972 and in five games to the Canadiens in 1979).
The New York Rangers won their first Stanley Cup since 1940 during the 1993–94 season, led by perennial all-star center Mark Messier, defenseman Brian Leetch, left-wing Adam Graves, and goaltender Mike Richter. The Rangers defeated the Vancouver Canucks in seven games in the finals. Although the team made numerous high-profile acquisitions and trades, including those of Wayne Gretzky and Luc Robitaille, the Rangers were unable to replicate their Stanley Cup victory in the years following the 1994 season, and by the 1997–98 season, the team had gone on a postseason drought that set a franchise record.
It took the New York Rangers 17 years to return to the postseason, but the team did it in 2011–12, driven by goaltender Henrik Lundqvist and forward Marian Gaborik, and they progressed to the conference finals, where they were defeated by the New Jersey Devils. In 2013–14, the Rangers upset their longtime rival Montreal Canadiens in a six-game Eastern Conference finals series to go to the Stanley Cup finals for the first time in 20 years, however, they were defeated by the Los Angeles Kings in five games in the finals.
The New York Rangers finished the season with the best record in the NHL and advanced to the conference finals the following season, however, they were defeated by the Tampa Bay Lightning in a seven-game series. The Rangers qualified for the playoffs in each of the following two seasons but failed to move past the second round each time. The team’s play deteriorated further in 2017–18, resulting in the Rangers’ worst record since 2003–04 and a last-place divisional finish in the American Hockey League.
