New York Mets Bio Data :

Queens-based professional baseball franchise the New York Mets, based in Flushing. Five National League (NL) pennants have been won by the Mets, two World Series championships (1969 and 1986). In 1959, New York attorney Bill Shea announced the development of the Continental League, which would include a New York-based team as a charter member. Professional baseball’s expansion led to the league’s cancellation in 1960 when it was promised two teams in each of the American and National League.

After considering several other names, the New York Mets were chosen because it was short and easy, resembled the corporate name (the New York Metropolitan Baseball Club Inc.), was widely accepted by fans, and was reminiscent of an earlier New York baseball team, the American Association’s New York Mets. The Mets, sometimes known as the Amazin’ Mets or the Amazins, began to play in the Polo Grounds in 1962 and moved to Shea Stadium after two seasons. (The Mets moved to Citi Field in 2009, where they play their home games.)

Gil Hodges, Duke Snider, and Yogi Berra were all over-the-hill veterans in the early Mets squads, and they were all managed by Casey Stengel, the Yankees manager during their five-year World Series winning streak (1949–53). The squad was nicknamed the “Lovable Losers” after losing a record 120 games in its first season as a result of this sentimental endeavor.

After trailing the Chicago Cubs by 9.5 games in the NL East in mid-August, the “Miracle Mets” won an improbable World Series triumph, defeating the Baltimore Orioles in the World Series and becoming known as the “Miracle Mets.” The New York Mets returned to the World Series in 1973 but lost in seven games to the Oakland Athletics after Willie Mays joined the team in 1972. The team had a poor record throughout the rest of the decade.

Dwight “Doc” Gooden, Jesse Orosco, and Sid Fernandez, as well as powerhouse hitters like Darryl Strawberry and Gary Carter, revived the Mets in the 1980s. Mets won their second World Series in 1986, defeating Boston Red Sox in a legendary series that is best remembered for first baseman Bill Buckner’s error in the 10th inning of game six that allowed the team to steal an improbable victory, then go on to win the championship with another comeback victory. Despite winning the NL East in 1988, the Mets were unable to reach the World Series throughout the rest of the 1980s and the 1990s due to a number of young stars’ substance usage.

The team had its worst season since 1965 in 1993, when it lost 103 games, its worst total since 1965. It wasn’t until the 1990s that the team began to improve, and in 2000 Mike Piazza led the Mets to the World Series, where they lost to their crosstown rivals the Yankees in a game dubbed the “Subway Series.” Second consecutive playoff appearance in 2006, but a dramatic late-season collapse saw the Mets miss out the following year.

First, in major league history, they became the first club to be eliminated from playoff contention in consecutive years by losing their final regular-season game at home, which the Mets did in 2008. In the wake of the setback, the Mets entered a long era of losing seasons and NL East mediocrity. However, injuries and bad play led the Mets to a disappointing 92-loss season in 2017 (the team lost in the NL Wild Card Game). The New York Mets’ postseason saga lasted until the 2030s.
