Career

The franchise, which was known as the Titans until 1963, was founded as one of the founding teams of the upstart American Football League (AFL) in 1960 and was plagued by financial difficulties and athletic mediocrity it competed with the older Giants franchise in the New York market.

A bright spot in the team’s early years was wide receiver Don Maynard, who joined the team in its inaugural season and went on to set nearly every major receiving record in the game’s history, earning him a spot in the Hall of Fame. The newly renamed Jets hired head coach Weeb Ewbank (who had previously guided the Colts to championships in the late 1950s) in 1963, and in 1965 they acquired Namath, which marked the beginning of the team’s transition to a more respectable position in football.

The famed quarterback, known as “Broadway Joe,” was known for his good looks and late-night partying, which earned him adoring fans as well as commercial endorsements during his career. A highlight of Namath’s swagger was when in the week leading up to the 1969 Super Bowl against the heavily favored Indianapolis Colts of the NFL.

He guaranteed a victory over the league’s heavily favored Colts, who was widely considered to be the superior professional football league and had easily won the previous two Super Bowls. After making his promise, Namath delivered as the Jets defeated the Colts, 16–7. Before the NFL and AFL merged in 1970, the Jets’ victory showed that the two leagues were on equal footing, which allayed owners’ fears.

Namath was released from his contract in 1977, following a lengthy playoff drought that began in 1970. The Jets returned to the postseason in 1981 and advanced to the American Football Conference (AFC) championship game the following year, led by a tenacious defensive line known as the “New York Sack Exchange.” For the remainder of the 1980s and into the early 1990s, the Jets had a few successful seasons here and there, but it wasn’t until 1998 that the team enjoyed its most sustained period of success.

With running back Curtis Martin and wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson at their disposal, the New York Jets were led by coach Bill Parcells (who had previously managed the New York Giants to two Super Bowl victories) to an AFC championship game defeat by the Denver Broncos in 1999. The Jets made the playoffs in four of the following eight seasons, but they were never truly competitive in the AFC, which is extremely competitive.

The Jets acquired former Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre in the summer of 2008 with the hope of improving their fortunes. However, after a 9–7 season, which was not good enough to qualify the team for the postseason, Favre left the team and a new coaching regime was installed.

When the Jets returned to the field in 2009, they repeated their 9–7 record from the previous season while also advancing to the AFC playoffs, where they defeated the Indianapolis Colts in two road games before losing to them in the conference championship game.

The following season, the Jets posted another pair of upset road victories in the first two rounds of the playoffs, but they were defeated by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC championship game, ending their season. The Jets’ winning streak came to an end the following season, and the team finished with a losing record in 2012.

Ryan, along with the team’s general manager, was fired in 2014 as a result of the team’s continued struggles the previous two seasons. New York rebounded to win 10 games in 2015 but was unable to qualify for the postseason due to injury. In 2016, the team fell to the bottom of its division for the second time.
