A professional ice hockey team from Brooklyn, New York, the New York Islanders compete in the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League. They are a member of the Metropolitan Division (NHL). The Islanders have won four Stanley Cups, the most recently in 1980–1983. The Islanders were founded in 1972 and were based in Uniondale, New York, for its first 42 seasons.
The club was called after the town where it was founded, which is located on Long Island. During its first two seasons, the team ended significantly below.500. Al Arbour was hired as the Islanders’ head coach prior to the 1973–74 season, and he would go on to amass a franchise-record 740 victories over the course of 20 full or partial seasons with the team.
The squad earned its first postseason spot in 1974–75, advancing to the league semifinals for the first of three consecutive seasons until finishing third in the league. From 1979–80 to 1982–83, that young group (all but Smith were under the age of 25 at the start of the season) displayed postseason poise that belied their youth, losing only three games in their first four Stanley Cup finals and defeating the Philadelphia Flyers, Minnesota North Stars, Vancouver Canucks, and Edmonton Oilers to win four consecutive NHL championships from 1979–80 to 1982–83.
Ultimately, the team was defeated in the Stanley Cup finals in its fifth appearance in 1983–84, marking a symbolic passing of the torch to the Oilers, who were on the verge of becoming a dynasty. Even though the New York Rangers continued to qualify for the postseason until the late 1980s, the team—which was captained by centers Pat LaFontaine and Brent Sutter towards the end of the decade—failed to move any further than the second round of the playoffs during this time.
Unless the franchise was able to surprise everyone by reaching the conference finals in 1992–93 thanks to the efforts of center Pierre Turgeon, the 1990s were a dark period for the franchise. Between 1988–1989 and 2000–01, the Islanders finished last in their division five times, for a total of eight times in the 13 seasons between those two years. It was the first time since 1997–98 that the team has made it to the postseason.
From that season to the next season, the Rangers made four visits to the postseason, but each time they were eliminated in the first round. In the 2007–08 season, the Islanders finished at the bottom of the Atlantic Division standings. Having been in the bottom three for five consecutive seasons, the team was propelled back into the playoffs by rising star center John Tavares in 2012–13 but was eliminated in the first round.
The recovery, however, was short-lived, as the Islanders finished bottom in their division in the 2013–14 season. The squad bounced back the next season, posting the franchise’s first 100-point season since 1983–84, only to be eliminated in the first round of the playoffs for the second consecutive year. Despite making their first appearance in the postseason in 22 years in 2015–16, the Islanders were eliminated in the second round of that season’s playoffs.
While an Islanders squad with 103 points returned to the playoffs in 2018–19, they were eliminated in the second round of the tournament. The following two seasons, both of which were cut short by the COVID-19 epidemic, saw New York achieve greater postseason success.
While the Islanders made it to the conference finals for the first time since 1993, they were defeated by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the series’ conclusion.
