Minneapolis-based American professional baseball franchise the Minnesota Twins, which competes in the American League (AL). Before moving to Minneapolis in 1961, the Twins played most of their games in Washington, D.C. (1901–60), where they were known as the Senators. The team has three World Series championships (1924, 1987, and 1991) as well as six American League pennants to their credit. An American League team created in 1901, the Washington Senators have been a part of the league ever since.
Between 1903 and 1911, the Senators had some of the worst winning percentages in baseball history, finishing last or second-to-last in nine straight seasons. “Washington—first in war, first in peace, and last in the American League” was a memorable phrase coined by a newspaperman. For these Senator teams, Walter Johnson was the only bright spot, with a 2.17 earned run average over the course of his 21-year big league career, all of which was spent in Washington. In 1925 and 1933, the Senators made it back to the World Series, but both times they lost. Minnesota won the AL Central Division titles in 1969 and 1970 thanks to Carew, Oliva, and Killebrew, who won the AL Rookie of the Year award in their first season with the team. The threat of contraction was completely eliminated in 2002 when a court ruling mandated that the Minnesota Twins play out their lease at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome, allowing the organization to plan for the construction of a more-profitable baseball-only venue (Target Field, which opened in 2010).
There have been three successive AL Central Division championships for the Minnesota Twins since 2002, however, the team has never made it to the World Series in either case.
