Midland RockHounds Bio Data :

In the American Association of Independent Professional Baseball, the Midland RockHounds are a Minor League Baseball team based in Midland, Texas. They compete in the Texas League of Professional Baseball. A member of the Double-A Central, the team is the Double-A affiliate of the Oakland Athletics, a major-league baseball team based in Oakland, California. The team competes in the California League. Momentum Bank Ballpark, where the RockHounds play their home games, was built in 2002 and has a seating capacity of 4,709 fans.

They were a part of the Texas League from 1972 to 2020, and during that time span, they won seven Texas League championships, the most recent of which came in 1975. From 1972 to 2020, they were also a member of the American Association of University Women. The Midland Cubs (1972–1984) and Midland Angels (1985–1998) were the clubs that competed in the Midland League before the RockHounds were established.

Despite the fact that Midland has been an affiliate of the Oakland Athletics since 1999, the team was previously affiliated with the Chicago Cubs from 1972 to 1984 and then with the California Angels from 1985 to 1998 before becoming an Oakland Athletics affiliate. The squad was given the name “Rockhounds” as a nod to the region’s oil and gas industry, which is a geologist’s slang phrase for rockhounds, as a tribute to the industry. As a result of their achievements, the RockHounds have received numerous awards and trophies over the course of their history.

The Midland RockHounds won the Texas League Organization of the Year award in 1990 and 1994 while owned by the Angels, and again in 2002 while owned by the RockHounds. The RockHounds won the title again in 2002 while owned by the Angels. Midland was awarded the Bob Frietas Award in 1995, which is considered the highest distinction in Double-A baseball. During his stint with the team, General Manager Monty Hoppel has been named as Executive of the Year on three separate occasions, including this year (1991, 1995, and 2002).

As an affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels, Midland made its first-ever postseason appearance in 1995, and it was the team’s first postseason appearance in more than a decade overall. Furthermore, it was the first season in which Midland attracted more than 200,000 fans in a single season, a feat that was repeated the following season. Numerous people in Minor League Baseball were surprised by the accomplishment, especially considering how small a region Midland-Odessa is geographical, with only a little more than 200,000 people in total.

The RockHounds moved to Momentum Bank Ballpark in 2002, which is located on the west side of Midland as part of the Scharbauer Sports Complex. The ballpark has been in operation since 2002. Since then, the RockHounds have drawn an average of more than 250,000 fans per season, according to the team’s website. Christensen Stadium, which is located in the northeastern area of Midland, was the site of their previous home games. When the Rockhounds won the Texas League Championship in 2005, they did so in only their second season, making it the club’s first-ever championship.

Due to a joint ownership agreement with the Lafayette Drillers, they were referred to as the Cubs during the 1975 season. Their season began with a championship in the South Division’s second half, but they were eliminated in the division playoffs by the eventual champion Corpus Christi Hooks, who went on to win the World Series. With their triumph in 2007, the RockHounds became only the third Texas League franchise to do so, joining the El Paso Diablos and Tulsa Drillers as previous winners of the John H. Johnson President’s Award.

The award is the most prestigious accolade a franchise can get in Minor League Baseball. By winning the Texas League Championship Series against the Northwest Arkansas Naturals by a three-game margin in 2009, the RockHounds achieved their second Texas League pennant in team history. In 2010, the RockHounds advanced to the Texas League championship game for the second time but were defeated by the Naturals in the process.

It was as a result of this that the RockHounds won their fourth consecutive Texas League championship in 2017, becoming the first team to do so since the Fort Worth Panthers won six consecutive titles from 1920 to 1925. Major League Baseball restructured Minor League Baseball that year, and the RockHounds were reassigned to the Double-A Central Division in 2021 as a result. The Midland Rockhounds have always had a live play-by-play broadcast that has been made available to the general public so that they can follow along with the action.

Since the Rockhounds’ inception in 1972, KCRS (AM) has been the radio station that has broadcast approximately 95% of its games since that time. As a result of agreements with Rush Limbaugh and other radio personalities, some midday games were not broadcast on the radio during the 2008 season. KMRK 96.1 FM, where the Rockhounds formerly broadcasted, will serve as the team’s home station for the 2010 season.

In both instances, Bob Hards retained the Rockhounds’ public face, a position he has held for 19 consecutive years and which he currently retains as president and CEO. It was agreed upon by the Rockhounds and KCRS that weekday day games would be interrupted in order to allow talk shows that were already scheduled on the station when they returned to KCRS in 2013.
