Miami Dolphins Bio Data :

The Miami Dolphins are an American professional gridiron football team based in Miami that participates in the American Football Conference (AFC) of the National Football League (NFL). As the first team in NFL history to go undefeated for a complete season (the 1972 season concluded without a loss and culminated in a triumph in Super Bowl VII), the Dolphins have a storied history that includes two Super Bowl championships (1973–74) and five conference championships.

The Miami Dolphins were founded in 1966, four years before the American Football League (AFL) united with the National Football League (NFL). Failures throughout the team’s early years led to the appointment of Don Shula, a former Baltimore Colts head coach, as the team’s head coach in 1970. After taking over the Dolphins, Shula immediately turned the team around, leading them to postseason participation in each of his first five seasons with the team, including the team’s first trip to the Super Bowl, which they lost to the Dallas Cowboys in January 1972.

Shula was named the NFL’s Coach of the Year in 1972. The 1972 Miami Dolphins team dominated the NFL, going undefeated in the process. Led by the “no-name” defense, captained by middle linebacker Nick Buoniconti, and a potent offense led by five players who would go on to the Hall of Fame: quarterback Bob Griese (who was injured mid-season and replaced by Earl Morrall), wide receiver Paul Warfield, running back Larry Csonka, and linemen Larry Little and Jim Langer.

The team dominated the Returning to the Super Bowl the following season and becoming the first franchise in history to make three consecutive Super Bowl appearances, Miami defeated the Minnesota Vikings 24–7 to claim the championship. Despite fielding consistently competitive teams during the remainder of the 1970s, the Dolphins failed to qualify for another Super Bowl during the decade.

The Miami Dolphins selected quarterback Dan Marino in the first round of the 1983 NFL Draft. Marino went on to set numerous career passing records and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Using wide receivers Mark Clayton and Mark Duper, as well as a line led by Dwight Stephenson, Marino was able to put together an attack that consistently placed towards the top of the NFL’s rankings. Marino retired from the NFL after the 2006 season. Although the Dolphins enjoyed significant success during the regular season, Marino and the team only made it to the Super Bowl once throughout his 17-year career, losing 38–16 to the San Francisco 49ers in 1985.

Shula retired following the 1995 season, having amassed the most victories in the history of the NFL. Beginning in the late 1990s, defensive-minded teams headed by defensive end Jason Taylor, linebacker Zach Thomas, and cornerback Sam Madison enjoyed moderate success. However, the team entered the longest postseason drought in franchise history in 2002, when the team lost to the New Orleans Saints. After a catastrophic one-win season in 2007, the team hired Super Bowl-winning coach Bill Parcells as its new head of football operations, bringing with it the prospect of a return to winning ways.

On the season, Miami finished with 11 wins and 5 losses (tying the NFL record for the most win improvement from the previous season) and claimed a share of the division championship. Parcells was fired by the Dolphins in 2010 as the team was in the midst of three straight losing seasons, which led to a second coaching change following the 2011 campaign. The Dolphins’ dismal play persisted, though, as their skid of seasons without a postseason appearance reached a franchise-record seven following the 2015 season. The Dolphins rebounded the following season, winning 10 games and making it to the postseason, where they were eliminated in the first round. After that, Miami suffered through three straight losing seasons.
