Maureen Lipman Bio Data:

Dame Maureen Lipman was born on the 10th of May 1946 in Hull, Yorkshire, England, and is an English actress. Her father worked as a Jewish tailor, and her mother, Zelma, used to drag Maureen to the pantomime and shove her onto the stage, forcing her to pursue acting. She went to the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art to further her education. Since then, she has appeared in a variety of West End shows, including See How They Run (1984), Candide, Lost in Yonkers, and her one-woman show Re Joyce, which is an ode to her heroine Joyce Grenfell and which she wrote and performed. Lipman supports the activities of the Burma Campaign UK, which is the largest non-governmental organization (NGO) in Europe dedicated to Burma. Lipman is a supporter of the country’s democratic transition during this difficult time.

Aside from that, Lipman contributes to the work of Prospect Burma, a non-political organization that provides Burmese students with the opportunity to study at universities outside of the country. Prospect Burma was represented by Lipman in the BBC Radio 4 Charity Appeal, which aired on September 6, 2009, and was broadcast worldwide. During the 2006 Israel-Hezbollah conflict, Lipman sided with the Jewish state. According to her, “human life is not cheap to the Israelis, and human life on the other side is pretty cheap actually, since they strap bombs on people and send them to blow themselves up,” she stated in a debate on the BBC’s This Week on July 13, 2006.

Maureen Lipman Relationship

Lipman is a member of the Jewish faith. She was married to playwright Jack Rosenthal from 1974 until his death in 2004, and she has been in a number of his productions as a result of their union. Amy Rosenthal and Adam Rosenthal, both writers, are her children. Lipman is a supporter of the Labor Party. She serves on the editorial advisory board of Jewish Renaissance magazine, where she is a contributing editor. These remarks were denounced by Muslim political columnist Yasmin Alibhai-Brown, who wrote in the New Statesman that Lipman was “brutally straight” and “sees no equivalence” between the lives of the two tribes; and left-wing journalist John Pilger, who wrote in the New Statesman that the BBC should not have allowed Lipman, whom he described as “a Jew and promoter of selective good causes,” to air her allegedly insensitive remarks without.

As a response to Alibhai-racist Brown’s claim, Lipman asserted that the columnist had purposefully misconstrued Lipman’s comments as generalisations about Muslims rather than specific statements about terrorists. Maureen has only missed four months of work in her 28 years in the industry, and that was when she underwent significant surgery to remove a tumor from the top of her spine, which was threatening to cripple her if left untreated. Many people know Maureen Lipman as “Beattie” from the British Telecom commercials that earned her an award for “You Got an Ology?” but, in actuality, she has accomplished a great deal more in her career.

Maureen Lipman Career

In recognition of her contributions to drama, she was granted the C.B.E. (Commander of the British Empire) in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours List in 1999. She married Jack Rosenthal in 1993, and he was awarded the title of C.B.E. (Commander of the British Empire). Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire was bestowed upon her in the 2020 Queen’s Birthday Honours List in recognition of her contributions to charitable causes, entertainment, and the arts. Following her stage debut in a stage performance of The Knack at the Palace Theatre in Watford, Lipman went on to have a long and successful career in the theatre.

In order to obtain the position, she stated that a documentary producer was interested in following her while she searched for her first job—this was a lie, but it appeared to be effective. During her time at the Old Vic, she was a member of Laurence Olivier’s Royal National Theatre Company. She made a cameo appearance in the film Up the Junction, which was her first cinematic role. The situation comedy Agony (1979) was Lipman’s first television appearance after early roles in the sitcoms The Lovers and Doctor at Large. In the film, she played an agony aunt who has a terrible personal life, and she went on to become well-known. She starred as the lead in the television series All at No 20 and played a variety of characters in the series About Face, in which she played a variety of personalities.

The character of Joyce Grenfell in the biographical television show Re: Joyce!, which she co-wrote with James Roose-Evans, is one of her most well-known roles. She is also known for portraying Beatrice Bellman (Beatie/BT), an elderly Jewish grandmother in a series of television commercials for British Telecom. She has continued to work in the theatre for more than thirty years, most recently portraying Aunt Eller in the National Theatre’s production of Oklahoma!, which she co-starred in alongside Hugh Jackman. During its run, she appeared on The Paul O’Grady Show twice, once with Julie Walters to promote her most recent book Past-It Notes and the other to discuss her upcoming performance as Madame Armfeldt in the Sondheim musical A Little Night Music, which is currently playing at the Menier Chocolate Factory.
