Matthew Kiichi Heafy (born January 26, 1986) is a Japanese-born American musician better known for his work with the heavy metal band Trivium as a guitarist and lead vocalist. Along with former Trivium producer Jason Suecof, he was the lead vocalist for the band Capharnaum.

Career

Following his guitar appearance at the school talent show, eafy was approached by Trivium’s original guitarist, Brad Lewter, who invited him to audition for the band. Despite being just 12 years old, he was initially accepted as lead guitarist (other members were 15-16 at that time). However, owing to artistic disagreements over the band’s potential musical style, Lewter left the band in less than a month. And though Heafy was unaware of his singing voice at the time, drummer Travis Smith urged him to do vocals. The band began searching for an external singer to fill the vacancy, but they were unsuccessful in seeking a suitable candidate. Heafy eventually decided to join Trivium as a full-time lead singer while still remaining the band’s lead guitarist. He taught himself to growl and scream, particularly in the early years of the band. However, he confessed to using the methods inappropriately for the majority of his career, resulting in significant vocal chord injury in the years leading up to the band’s appearance at Rock on the Range in 2014, when he blew his voice on stage. Following M. Shadows of Avenged Sevenfold’s suggestion, he began taking voice lessons from coach Ron Anderson the same year.

In 2016, Heafy resumed live unclean vocal performances with the same pace as before his injury, citing Anderson’s lessons as a source of assistance and development. He says that the current method is simpler than regular speaking. Heafy’s vocal repertoire was significantly extended with the success of Trivium’s fourth record, Shogun, which ranged from rather melodic singing to hardcore screams. In Waves, Trivium’s fifth studio album, was released in 2011 with a “greater focus on music rather than ability,” with the album showcasing the full spectrum of Heafy’s vocal skills, with some songs consisting entirely of shouting, others with no screaming at all, and several songs that merged the two as with previous albums.Heafy often shares lead guitar duties with Corey Beaulieu in Trivium, but he is the one who records the albums’ rhythm tracks.
After Ember to Inferno, Heafy jokingly dabbled in the post-hardcore genre in 2012, releasing one single under the name Tomorrow Is Monday titled “Head on Collision with a Rosebush Catching Fire.” Heafy posted a collaboration EP with American YouTuber and musician Jared Dines on December 4, 2020.
