Matisyahu Biography and Wiki:

Matthew Miller was the first name given to Matisyahu when he was born on June 30, 1979 in West Chester, Pennsylvania. His family initially settled in Berkeley, California, but they ultimately decided to make their home in White Plains, New York. Miller originally rebelled against the orthodox Jewish upbringing he had received, and by the time he was in his early teens, he identified as a Deadhead and a hippy. However, while camping in Colorado at the age of 14, he had a religious epiphany that led to his eventual conversion to Judaism. Shortly after this, he travelled to Israel. After moving back to White Plains, he decided against finishing high school and instead spent his time attending concerts of the band Phish all around the United States. After returning home, he convinced his parents to send him to a wilderness school in Bend, Oregon. While there, he fell in love with hip-hop and reggae music, and he started rapping in open-mic contests. At the age of 19, he moved back to New York City and enrolled at the New School for Social Research in Manhattan.

Concurrently, he became a member of the Carlebach Shul, a synagogue that supported and fostered his musical talents. After meeting a Lubavitch rabbi, he changed his name to Matisyahu and became interested in the Lubavitch Hasidic sect of Judaism, which is known for its stringency. As Matisyahu continued to play, he put together a backing band that included guitarist Aaron Dugan, bassist Josh Werner, and drummer Jonah David. Shake Off the Dust…Arise was an album that was recorded by the band and published by JDub Records in the year 2004. Matisyahu taped one of his February 2005 gigs and published the material as Live at Stubb’s, which was issued in April courtesy of Or Music before getting picked up for national distribution by Epic Records. The recording was made while Matisyahu was on tour in support of the album. It was republished by Epic on August 23, 2005, at the same time that Matisyahu was preparing a second studio album with producer Bill Laswell and going on tour across the country. In March of 2006, the finished product was released under the title Youth. It debuted at number one on the reggae chart and at number four on the Billboard 200. Additionally, it was put forth as a candidate for the Grammy Award in the area of Best Reggae Album. Customers who ordered the album via mail-order were given access to a dub version of the recording that was simultaneously released.

During this time, Matisyahu’s backup musicians decided to release new material independently under the moniker Roots Tonic, which they gave to the side project they were working on. In May of 2006, the band made their debut with the album Roots Tonic Meets Bill Laswell, and towards the end of that same year, they also came out with the EP/DVD combo titled No Place to Be. However, Jonah David left the band in June 2007, and despite recruiting Skoota Warner as a replacement drummer, Roots Tonic effectively disintegrated after his departure. Instead, the entire group redirected its attention back to Matisyahu and, in August 2009, released Light. This album once again debuted atop the reggae chart and reached number nineteen on the Billboard 200. David was left out of this decision. Live at Stubb’s, Vol. 2 would not be released until two years later, at which point it would be accompanied by a DVD release.

Late in 2011, the musician uploaded a picture to his Instagram account showing him with his head shaved and his hair braided in side locks alongside the remark “No more Chassidic reggae superstar.” The transformation sparked some debate about Matisyahu’s stance on Judaism, but he took great pains in interviews to explain the change as a deepening of his personal spiritual beliefs and as part of a greater desire to redefine his true artistic identity. Matisyahu was brought up in the strictest of Jewish customs from an early age. He received his religious education at a Hebrew school, where he was expected to study the tenets of Judaism. After some time, he enrolled at what was then known as the ‘White Plains Senior High School.’ Matisyahu, when he was a teenager, began to push back against the strict instructions, and he eventually left school as a result of this. During this time period, he developed a dependency on several narcotics. During the years when Matisyahu was still in his teens, he was a devoted follower of the rock band Phish. He went on an adventure trip into the bush when he was 14 years old, and it was designed for teenagers. There, he had the epiphany that his Jewish heritage was something to be proud of. As time went on, Matisyahu earned the reputation of being the “Jewish rapper kid.” Between the years 2001 and 2007, Matisyahu was involved with the Hasidic branch of Judaism. He eventually became quite interested in religious and philosophical topics. He changed his name to “Matisyahu,” which is Hebrew for “Gift of God,” and became a musician under that moniker. While living in Bend, Oregon, Matisyahu kicked off his career as a singer by performing as a rapper. He went on stage under the guise of “MC Truth” for more than a year. Matisyahu entered into a recording agreement with the Jewish music label known as “JDub Records” in the year 2004. In October of 2004, he released his debut studio album, which was titled “Shake Off the Dust…Arise.”

The song was included on his first studio album, but the version that was released as a single was a condensed version of the whole song. It was one of the most successful songs he had ever released. It peaked at number seven on the ‘Modern Rock Tracks’ chart and achieved a position of number 28 on the ‘Billboard Hot 100’ list. Trey Anastasio, a member of the band Phish, invited Matisyahu to join him on stage during the 2005 edition of the Bonnaroo Music Festival. Matisyahu accepted the invitation. Through lyrical gymnastics and spontaneous beatboxing, he was able to garner the acclaim of the crowd. Live at Stubb’s is the name of the live CD that Matisyahu recorded in 2006. It was captured at a live performance in Austin and released on the ‘Or Music’ label. This album began its journey on the “Billboard Reggae Albums Chart” at position number five. The video for the song “King Without a Crown” was included on the CD that I bought. “Youth” was Matisyahu’s second studio album, and it was released in the year 2006. The purpose of the CD was to give a platform to the opinions of today’s young people. There were references made in the songs’ lyrics to many aspects of Jewish belief.
