Her Polish-Catholic parents brought her up in a tiny, single-family home in Nutley, New Jersey, a working-class suburb near New York City, as the second of six children. Martha Kostyra was raised in Nutley, New Jersey, in a Polish-American family where she learned the traditional arts of cooking, sewing, canning and preserving, housekeeping, and gardening from her mother and grandmother. While still in elementary school, she began organizing birthday parties for the children of her neighbors, and she used her modelling experience in New York City to help pay for her college education.
In 1961, while a student at Barnard College (where she received a B.A. in European history and architectural history in 1963), she married law student Andrew Stewart, with whom she had a daughter, Alexis, who was born in 1965. When Martha Stewart and her family moved to Westport, Connecticut, they set their sights on repairing Turkey Hill, a Federal-style farmhouse, which they purchased in 1965.
