Ramakrishnan grew up in Mississauga, Ontario, where he was born and reared. She was born in Canada to Sri Lankan Tamil immigrants who fled the civil war and came to this country as a child. When asked about her ethnicity, she says she is “Tamil-Canadian,” not “Sri Lankan”.
