Career

Black Sheep has created two successive albums [Black Sheep (1974) and Encouraging Words (1995)] with Capitol Records. They were the opening event of KISS when the band’s Christmas Eve 1975 suddenly ended with an icy accident involving the equipment truck on New York State Thruway. Lou Gramm was unable, year before, to support his album, and was able to meet his future bandmate Mick Jones. Jones performed with Spooky Tooth in Rochester and Jones received a copy of the first album of Black Sheep (S/T) from Gramm.

It was not much after the accident of the Black Sheep that Jones was in early 1976. Gramm flown down to New York to perform the band with the blessings of his Black Sheep fellows. He got the job with his mighty vocals. Lou Grammatico was then Lou Gramm, and became one of the most successful rock vocalists of the late 1970s and 80s, initially known as the “Trigger” band and later renamed Foreigner. In 1978 when the “Hot Blooded” was published, the Circus magazine commented that Robert Plant had the voice to envy Lou Gramm.

Foreigner’s unique voices made him one of the Top 100 Artists of All Time from Billboard in the history of songs. Gramm was the lead singers for all of Foreigner’s hit songs, including “Blue Morning, Blue Day,” “Head Games,” “Dirty White Boy” and the song “Urgent,” “Juke Box Hero,” “Break It Up” and “Say You Volunteer” “Cold as Ice,” “Long, Long Way from Home,” “Long,” “Hot Blooded” His ballads “Waiting For a Girl Like You,” which lasted ten weeks at # 2 on the 1981-82 American Hot 100, and “I Want to Know What Is” which was #1 internationally (US & UK) in 1985 were his main songs for the band. The band was two of their biggest hits. Their first eight singles cracked the Top 20 billboard,(4 went top ten) making it the first band since the Beatles.

The wildly successful Double Vision started after the band’s second album, personnel shifts started taking place. After their next album he decided to reduce the group’s lineup from 6 to four members together. Head Games and Gramm and Jones. Gramm’s next album, the highest point of his work with Foreigner, was appropriately titled 4. Gramm wanted the band to be true to its more pure rock origins, favouring music with strong drum and guitar structure, while Jones adopted a more lucrative approach to the synthesiser ballads style of the 1980s. Foreigner continued to fight continuing conflicts within the country by 1987.

Gramm released his first solo album Ready or Not, which received criticism and featured a top five hit single called “Midnight Blue.” The album Inside Information was released in late 1987, and was number 15 in Billboard’s album chart. The extracted “Say You Will” came out late in that year, early 1988 it reached number 6 at the Hot 100, and in spring it was  Gramm left in 1990 with a close friend and former black sheep bassist Bruce Turgon, encouraged by his solo success. In 1990 he left the band. Atlantic Records released their self-titled album in 1991.

The group lacked cohesion despite positive reviews. The level of marketing and promotional support needed to support a new project was not also available. Shadow King dissolved soon. The same year the album Unusual Heat, which was made relatively unsuccessful by vocalist Johnny Edward was released by Foreigner The health and energy of Gramm gradually recovered. In 2003, Gramm left Foreigner again and since january 2004 has continuously been travelling the United States, Canada and Mexico (with occasional dates off the continent).

Lou Gramm continues his tours with his band from 2013, with numerous hits from his ancient foreigners. Triumph Books published Juke Box Hero: My Five Decades in Rock ‘n’ Roll, Gramm’s autobiography, in May 2013.
