Katherine Whitton Baker (June 8, 1950) is an actress from the United States. Baker began her acting career in the theatre and made her cinema debut in The Right Stuff, a 1983 drama film.Kathy Baker has been mysteriously denied full-out stardom despite making an award-winning effect in all three mediums (theatre, film, and television), despite demonstrating her adaptability in whatever material comes her way.
Helene Andree Baker (née Whitton) and John Seawand Baker, a geologist and educator who taught at both Princeton and the University of Paris, gave birth to Katherine Whitton Baker in Midland, Texas. She was born and raised in New Mexico, and she began performing at the age of ten. Kathy attended the University of California in Berkeley, where she got her Bachelor of Arts degree in French in 1977, and then moved to Paris to study haute cooking at the prestigious Cordon Bleu. She went to the United States to work as a pastry chef, but realised she missed acting and finally joined San Francisco’s Magic Theatre, where she featured in the play “The Man Who Killed the Buddha.” Sam Shepard, the playwright, was immediately drawn to her performance.
Kathy had a fantastic year in 1983. Shepard engaged her in a prominent role in one of his new plays, “Fool for Love,” at the Magic Theatre, where she used the stage name Kathy Whitton Baker. The play (and Kathy) were sent to New York after the premiere received rave reviews. She and her co-star Ed Harris earned Obie Awards in 1984 for their powerful performances, as did playwright Sam Shepard for his direction. The play itself was nominated for an Obie Award for “Best New American Play.” Kathy made her film debut the same year, co-starring as astronaut Alan Shepard’s wife in The Right Stuff (1983). Kathy continued to make inroads on the New York stage, appearing in “Desire Under the Elms” in 1984 and as a replacement for the Lemon role in Joseph Papp’s Obie-winning “Aunt Dan and Lemon” at Joseph Papp’s Shakespeare Festival in 1986.
In the gripping film thriller Street Smart (1987), both Kathy and Morgan Freeman stole the spotlight from star Christopher Reeve, with Kathy giving a bleak, heartbreaking performance as an ill-fated hooker to Freeman’s rabid pimp. Both performances were praised for their stunning realism and delivered a one-two punch. Kathy won both the National Society of Critics and the Boston Society of Critics honours, but was unjustly overlooked in the Oscar competition (Freeman was nominated, but lost).
Kathy continued to give excellent performances in quality films throughout the rest of the decade, including Clean and Sober (1988), in which she played a recovering addict; Permanent Record (1988), in which she played a wife whose son commits suicide; Jacknife (1989), in which she reunited with Ed Harris as the put-upon, plain-Jane sister of an alcoholic Vietnam vet; and Edward Scissorhands (1990), in which she played a seemingly model housewife … It felt as if being a top-tier celebrity was a certain conclusion.
