Kathryn Bigelow Bio Data :

Kathryn Bigelow, full name Kathryn Ann Bigelow (born November 27, 1951, San Carlos, California, United States), is an American film director and screenwriter who is best known for action films in which the characters are typically battling with their own inner conflicts. Because of her work on The Hurt Locker, she became the first woman to receive an Academy Award for best director (2008).

Bigelow studied painting at the San Francisco Art Institute before moving to New York City in the early 1970s to take part in the Whitney Museum’s independent study program, which she continued until the end of her career. Soon after, she developed an interest in filmmaking, and she was awarded a scholarship to attend Columbia University’s graduate film school in New York. She created the short film The Set-Up while she was there (1978).

After graduating from Columbia in 1979, Bigelow began working on her first feature-length film, The Loveless, for which she co-wrote the screenplay and served as co-director and cowriter (with Monty Montgomery). With Willem Dafoe in the lead role, the 1982 movie told the storey of a motorcycle gang’s visit to a small Southern town, which resulted in bloody mayhem. Following that, Bigelow received a number of scripts, most of them were high-school comedies. She declined the offers and instead began teaching at the California Institute of the Arts in 1983, where she has been ever since.

Career

When Bigelow returned to the big screen with Near Dark, a vampire thriller that became a cult classic in 1987, it was a welcome return for the director. Two years later, she tied the knot with filmmaker James Cameron (divorced 1991). The action picture Blue Steel (1989), which she co-wrote and directed, was characterized as a “woman’s action film.” Jamie Lee Curtis appears in the crime drama as a police officer who is stalked by a serial killer in the role.

Bigelow’s next picture, Point Break (1991), tells the story of an FBI agent (Keanu Reeves) whose loyalty is tested as he infiltrates a charming gang of bank robbers on the California coast. Not only did it become a financial success, but it also cemented Bigelow’s position in the typically male-dominated realm of action films.

In 1995, she directed the science-fiction film Strange Days, which was a sophisticated drama about a futuristic technology that allows people to transmit ideas and memories from one person to another. Following the success of The Weight of Water (2000), Bigelow directed K-19: The Widowmaker (2002). The story revolves around a Soviet nuclear submarine that experiences a radiation leak, which is based on a true event. With Harrison Ford and Liam Neeson in the lead roles, the action thriller garnered a mixed reception and failed to attract a large audience.

The Hurt Locker, a war drama about the Iraq War, was Bigelow’s next endeavor as a filmmaker (2008). An elite unit of bomb detonators working in Iraq is the subject of this low-budget documentary. The perils of armed warfare, as well as the attraction it has for some soldiers, were studied without reference to the politics of the war, according to her.

In addition to Bigelow’s Academy Award for best director, the film received five other Academy Awards, including one for best picture. Following that, Bigelow re-teamed with The Hurt Locker screenwriter Mark Boal to direct Zero Dark Thirty (2012), a harrowing portrayal of the United States military and intelligence operation to apprehend Osama bin Laden, which was released in 2012. She also worked with Boal on the film Detroit (2017), which was inspired by the city’s riots in 1967.
