Jose Carreras Bio Data :

Known professionally as José Carreras, his full name is Josep Maria Carreras I Coll (born December 5, 1946, Barcelona, Spain). He is a Spanish operatic lyric tenor known for his rich voice and good looks. Carreras, one of the “Three Tenors” (along with the Italian singer Luciano Pavarotti and the Spanish singer Plácido Domingo), was instrumental in bringing opera to a wider audience through his performances.

Carreras was born in Barcelona and raised there as the youngest of three children. He demonstrated an early aptitude for music by staging mock operas and performing songs from films on a regular basis as a child. His parents enrolled him in the Barcelona Conservatory of Music when he was seven years old to pursue a musical education. Carreras began studying chemistry at the University of Barcelona when he was in his late teens, though he continued to pursue his musical training.

Career

Carreras made his operatic debut in Barcelona in January 1970, singing the minor role of Flavio in Vincenzo Bellini’s opera Norma. There, he met the Spanish soprano Montserrat Caballé, who would go on to sing the title role in the production.

Carreras benefited from the guidance of her and her brother, who assisted him in pursuing a successful international career. Carreras made his international debut as Rodolfo in Puccini’s La Bohème in Parma in 1971, and the following year he made his American debut at the New York City Opera as Pinkerton in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly the following year.

In 1974, he made his Metropolitan Opera debut as Cavaradossi in Puccini’s Tosca, in which he received acclaim. During the following decade, Carreras performed in a wide range of roles at opera houses all over the world and recorded a large number of albums.

After collapsing during a recording session in 1987, he was diagnosed with leukemia the following year. He made a full recovery after receiving a bone marrow transplant and undergoing chemotherapy treatments. It was in 1988 that he established the José Carreras International Leukemia Foundation in an effort to raise funds for leukemia research and treatment.

In 1990, he made his debut with Pavarotti and Domingo, and they were dubbed the “Three Tenors” for the occasion. Several recordings and numerous appearances followed the performance, which took place during the World Cup football (soccer) championship in Rome. The success of the event led to several recordings and numerous appearances following the performance.

Carreras, Domingo, and Pavarotti in Concert, the recording of their first performance together, was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1991. Carreras’ operatic career was interspersed with forays into the world of popular music. Carreras previously recorded the role of Tony in a recording of Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim’s West Side Story (1984), and in 1991, he released Hollywood Golden Classics, an album of popular songs that included songs from the musical West Side Story.

Carreras served as music director for the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, where he performed alongside a group of fellow Spanish opera stars, including Domingo and Caballé, with whom he had previously collaborated. The title role in Verdi’s Stiffelio, which he performed at Covent Garden in 1993, was one of a number of performances that he recorded for broadcast on television. In addition to his recordings of full operas and selections of arias, Carreras has also released Mediterranean Passion (2008), a collection of Catalan songs, which is available on CD.
