John William Schlitt is an American musician who, from 1986 until the band retired in late 2005, was the front singer of Christian rock band Petra. Schlitt had been lead vocalist for Head East until his retirement from the band in 1986, before joining Petra. Born in Lincoln, Illinois, John Schlitt. His family moved soon after to Mt. Pulaski, where he grew up. Schlitt started singing from an early age and showed interest in music. He joined a band called Something Different Vinegar Hills, when he was 13.
In his home town he graduated in 1968 from Mt. Pulaski high school. He met his wife, Dorla Froelich during his high school years. Schlitt studied Civil Engineering at the University of Illinois after graduating from high school. But music was still his principal interest. In 1972, alongside some college students he joined the rock band Head East as a lead singer. Schlitt finally graduated in 1974 from college and devoted himself full time to his music profession by juggling his musical careers and college studies.
Schlitt enjoyed the popularity of the band during the following years with Head East and produced many successes during the seventies. Five studios and a live CD were published. During this time, though, Schlitt also had a cocaine and alcohol dependence. When he was kicked out of the band in March 1980, his dependence reached a crescendo.
Career
After he was left for Head East, Schlitt was founded by “Johnny.” The band was short-lived, with brothers Jeff Schlitt, Colluci, McNeely, Tipton’s Troy and Burk Burkhardt, but his addiction increased rapidly, as he was “near to suicide” in a six- month despair. However, about the same period, his wife was reborn as a Christian and Schlitt was afterwards persuaded to see her pastor. Schlitt admits that he decided to finish his life and only agreed to meet “that my wife might say that after I had gone, he was trying.”
Schlitt was also a Christian who was born again. After that, Schlitt chose to give his family life to leave the music business. Then he started to sweep the floors of a company and gradually moved up through the ranks until he became a mining engineer and then a cost and planning engineer for a mining construction company. Schlitt was in the church of Gethsemane in Evansville, Indiana during this period and sung with the team of loving and adoring. Schlitt appeared with the band once again in 2011 to honour the band’s inaugural input to the Iowa Rock N Roll Music Association Hall of Fame, 31 years after being booted away from Head East.
Schlitt and the band’s keyboard player Roger Boyd were also joined by former Head East drummer Steve Huston. Schlitt recorded two solo albums during breaks at Petra, Shake in 1995 and Unfit For Swine in 1996. Both albums have been moderately good and positive reviews. Bob Hartman started working on an album together as II Guys From Petra, after Petra had retired in 2005, Schlitt and Petra guitarist and founder. Vertical Expressions was published on 26 January 2007. The CD has been performed multiple times by Hartman and Schlitt.
Schlitt also released on 2008-01-22 his third solo project, The Grafting. The record was produced by Dan Needham, the son-in-law of Schlitt. The CD was launched with first performances by Schlitt on the programme Celebrations of the tracks “The Grafting” and “Only Men.” The Daystar Television Network was aired internationally. In Mai 2008, John Schlitt travelled India with a whole new support band, StoneJava, playing eight gigs in six cities. With this new back-up ensemble, he and numerous Petra favourites sang songs from his solo CDs for excellent feedback.
His 4th solo project, The Greater Cause, was released in 2012 by Schlitt in 4K Records. The album was produced again by Dan Needham, Schlitt’s son-in-law. In July 2012, Hope Saves The World ranked the 30th highest on the Billboard and Christian Weekly Charts. His sixth studio album Go was published in 2019 through John Schlitt. He has been awarded several gold records, Grammys and Dove Awards by John Schlitt. He went around the globe and became the leading singer of Petra in the Gospel Music Hall of Fame.
