Joe Jackson Gibbs (born November 25, 1940) is a former professional football coach and owner of an auto racing team in the United States. From 1981 to 1992, and again from 2004 to 2007, he was the head coach of the Washington Redskins of the National Football League (NFL). Over the course of his first 12 seasons with the Redskins, he guided them to eight playoff appearances, four NFC Championships, and three Super Bowl championships. Gibbs is the only coach in Super Bowl history to win the game with three different starting quarterbacks.
Coach Joe Gibbs is largely recognised as one of the best in NFL history. He turned to NASCAR after retiring at the end of the 1992 season, creating the organisation Joe Gibbs Racing, which has since won five NASCAR Cup Series championships. In 2004, Gibbs returned out of retirement to take over as head coach of the Redskins, a position he held until 2007, when he announced his retirement at the end of the season. In 1996, Gibbs was named to the NFL 100 All-Time Team and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
In 2020, Gibbs will be inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame. Gibbs is the first person in history to win both a Super Bowl and a NASCAR Cup Series championship, as well as being inducted into both Halls of Fame. Gibbs is the older of two sons of Jackson Ceufud (1916–1989) and Winnie Era (Blalock) Gibbs (1915–2000) and was born in Mocksville, North Carolina. Gibbs was a standout quarterback at Santa Fe High School when he graduated in 1959. Gibbs was coached by Don Coryell at Cerritos Junior College and subsequently San Diego State University (SDSU). Gibbs got a bachelor’s degree from SDSU in 1964 and a master’s degree in 1966.
Gibbs began his coaching career at San Diego State under Coryell (1964–1966) as an offensive line coach. Before serving under John McKay at Southern California (1969–1970) and Frank Broyles at Arkansas (1971–1972), he held the same post under Bill Peterson at Florida State (1967–1968).
Gibbs led the extremely successful “Air Coryell” offence as the offensive coordinator for San Diego. During Gibbs’ two seasons in Los Angeles, the Chargers and quarterback Dan Fouts set several offensive records with a sophisticated throwing strategy. During their 1980 season, the Chargers averaged more over 400 yards of offence each game. After 17 years as an assistant coach, the Washington Redskins offered Gibbs the role of head coach. Redskins owner Jack Kent Cooke was on the hunt for alternatives after sacking then-head coa With a 124–60 regular-season record and a 16–5 postseason record, he was one of the NFL’s most successful coaches.
With a cumulative winning percentage of.683, he was the third best of all time (behind Vince Lombardi and John Madden). The Redskins have won four NFC East titles, made the playoffs eight times, and only had one losing season (7–9 in 1988) throughout his 12-year tenure. Gibbs is the first coach in NFL history to win three Super Bowls while using three different starting quarterbacks and running backs. During his time in San Diego, Gibbs assisted in the development of a passing-oriented offence, while his Redskins teams used a smash-mouth, rushing-oriented style known as the counter trey.
Gibbs was able to control the line of scrimmage by creating a strong offensive line (dubbed “The Hogs”), allowing workhorse running backs John Riggins, George Rogers, and Earnest Byner to power the ground game. With receivers like Art Monk, Gary Clark, and Ricky Sanders, Gibbs developed a deep throwing threat to compliment the ground game. Under the supervision of defensive coordinator Richie Petitbon, Gibbs’ attack was aided by aggressive defensive groups. The single back, double, or triple tight end set is credited to Gibbs. He utilised it to neutralise Hall of Fame linebacker Lawrence Taylor after learning it was difficult to block him with a running back. There was also a need for an extra tight end and a tackle.
The extra tight end provided the quarterback with additional protection. Gibbs is also credited with inventing the Trips formation, which involves stacking three wide receivers on one side of the field. Gibbs used shifts and moves that were common in his offensive. The formations caused mismatches and perplexed opposition defences, which were then exploited.
J.D., his son, passed away on January 11, 2019, after a long struggle with neurological brain disease, which he was diagnosed with in 2015. Gibbs gave a speech at the 2008 Republican National Convention on September 5, 2008, in which he expressed his support for John McCain and expressed his hope that the McCain-Palin ticket will bring about a “spiritual awakening” in the United States. Because, as the old Washington joke goes, “The Redskins are the only thing that unites the town,” Gibbs has long been forthright about his Christian faith but notoriously reticent about defining his political opinions
