Momoa, an only child, was born in 1979 in Nnkuli, Honolulu, Hawaii, to photographer Coni (Lemke) and painter Joseph Momoa. His father is Native Hawaiian, while his mother is German, Irish, and Native American. His mother reared him in the town of Norwalk, Iowa.

Career

Jason Momoa was born in Honolulu on August 1, 1979, and was raised by his mother in Norwalk, Iowa as a youngster. Momoa returned to Hawaii after graduating from high school and enrolled at the University of Hawaii. But his life would soon take a turn for the worst when he was found by Takeo Kobayashi, an international fashion designer, and his modelling career began. Momoa earned Hawaii’s Model of the Year and walked the catwalk for Louis Vuitton at the Governor’s Fashion Show in 1999, thanks to his attractive looks and sculpted body. Momoa immediately shifted his attention to acting, and in 1999 he auditioned for a main part on the world hit TV show Baywatch (then known as Baywatch Hawaii) in its tenth season. He was chosen from over 1,000 other performers for the role of Jason Ioane, which he portrayed for two seasons. Momoa spent considerable time exploring the world after the programme finished in 2001, including a trip to Tibet, where he found Buddhism. Momoa later relocated to Los Angeles to seek a career as an actor. His first two TV movie appearances, Baywatch: Hawaiian Wedding (2003) and Tempted (2003), kept his face on the screen until his next series, North Shore, came around in 2004.

North Shore lasted 20 episodes, but when it finished, Momoa was treated to something much better: Stargate: Atlantis. Momoa featured in numerous seasons of the famous sci-fi series as Ronan Dex, catapulting him to the next level of celebrity. During this time, Momoa was also involved in an argument at a Los Angeles bar, in which another client broke a glass across his face, requiring 140 stitches and leaving a scar over his left eye. After that, the scar became something of a hallmark for Momoa, and it served him well in his next part, which would catapult his career to new heights. Momoa was cast in a leading role in See, which premiered in November 2019 on the Apple TV+ streaming service, following his success with Aquaman.
