James Taylor was born in Boston, Massachusetts, in a family of musicians. A well-to-do Southern Scots family member, Dr. Isaac M. Taylor was a resident doctor at the hospital where his son had grown up. Gertrude Woodward, his mother, had aspirations of becoming an opera singer. Alex, Livingston, and Hugh were his three older brothers, while Kate was his only sister.
All of his siblings went on to make it as musicians and record their own records. When Dr. Taylor was named dean of the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, his family moved to Chapel Hill, North Carolina, when James was three years old. A fellow New Yorker guitarist named Danny “Kootch” Kortchmar introduced him at Milton Academy in 1963. After a while, they were both drawn to blues and country music.
When he was 14, he composed his first song and began playing in local coffeehouses with Kortchmar and The Corsairs, a band he founded with his brother Alex. When he started applying to colleges, he went into a depression and admitted himself into McLean Hospital in Massachusetts in 1965, where he wrote many of his first songs as a result of his time spent there.
