New York City-born Winkler was the son of Sol and Anna Winkler, both of whom were Jewish. When he was a boy growing up in Coney Island, one of his first jobs was riding a bumper car on the boardwalk. Despite being accepted to New York University on the G.I. bill despite having dropped out of high school, Winkler felt out of place among his university’s older and more mature students.
