Indianapolis Colts Bio Data :

National Football League (NFL) team the Indianapolis Colts, a professional gridiron football team based in Indianapolis, Indiana, that competes in the American Football Conference (NFL). They’ve won three NFL titles (1958, 1959, 1968), as well as two Super Bowls as the Baltimore (Maryland) Colts (1953–84). (1971, 2007). In 1953, the Indianapolis Colts were formed out of the ashes of the Dallas Texans, a former National Football League franchise. The NFL approved the purchase and relocation of the defunct Texans by the owners of the Baltimore Colts because of the continued support of the Baltimore area’s football fans.

The renamed Colts hired Weeb Ewbank, a future Hall of Fame head coach, and Johnny Unitas, one of football’s greatest quarterbacks, in 1954 and 1956, respectively. Jim Parker, Raymond Berry, and Lenny Moore were all future Hall of Famers when Unitas helmed a formidable offense in the late 1950s that also included Unitas.

During a nationally televised NFL championship game in 1958, the Colts defeated the New York Giants 23–17, with the Colts winning when running back Alan Ameche scored a one-yard touchdown in overtime. The “Greatest Game Ever Played” became a catchphrase for the 1958 championship game, which is widely regarded as the most significant moment in the modernization of professional football.

Next season, the Colts reclaimed the NFL title by defeating the Giants in the championship game for a second time. In 1969, the NFL champion Indianapolis Colts met the upstart American Football League (AFL) champion New York Jets in Super Bowl III, a matchup that captivated the nation. Joe Namath, a young quarterback, led the Jets to the greatest Super Bowl upset in history, saying before the game that he was certain that his team would win. The Colts defeated the Dallas Cowboys 16–13 in the 1971 Super Bowl to claim their first championship.

Unitas’ departure from the team in 1973 marked the beginning of a string of poor seasons and no playoff wins for the rest of the team’s time in Baltimore. After failing to secure local government funding for a new stadium, team owner Robert Irsay relocated the Colts to Indianapolis in the middle of the night in 1984, before most Colts fans were aware of any move.

The Colts Marching Band continued to perform in parades and civic events in Baltimore until 1996 when the Cleveland Browns relocated to the city and became the Ravens. In their first 11 seasons in Indianapolis, the Colts qualified for the playoffs only once. As a result of their 1998 acquisition of quarterback Peyton Manning and wide receiver Marvin Harrison, the Indianapolis Colts had one of the best offenses in the early 2000s. It’s hard to argue with Manning’s record-setting passing stats, but he’s frequently blamed for his team’s lack of playoff success

As a result of their victory over the Chicago Bears in 2007, Peyton Manning’s team was no longer questioned about their ability to win the Super Bowl. In 2009, the Indianapolis Colts won their first 14 games of the season, leading the AFC to the playoffs as the best team in the division. The Indianapolis Colts then cruised to the Super Bowl, where they were beaten by the Saints of New Orleans. Preseason neck surgery forced Manning to miss the entire 2011 NFL season, and the Colts finished with a 2–14 record, ending the team’s streak of nine straight seasons with at least 10 wins (which also included an NFL-record seven straight 12-win seasons [2003–09].

To avoid paying a large contract bonus and to begin rebuilding around a younger core of players, the Colts released Manning during the off-season and drafted quarterback Andrew Luck with the first pick in the 2012 NFL draught. During Luck’s first season with the Colts, he led the team to an 11–5 record and a first-round playoff loss. A division championship in 2013 was followed by an incredible 28-point comeback victory in its first playoff game—the second-largest point differential made up during a win in NFL postseason history—before the team was knocked out in the following playoff round. He kept getting better as time went on, and the Colts won a third straight division title and knocked out Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos to reach the AFC championship game in 2014.

After that, the Colts struggled mightily, going 8–8 each season and missing the playoffs the following two years. It was Luck’s first season since undergoing shoulder surgery after the 2016 season, but complications during his recovery kept him from participating in the Colts’ 4–12 campaign. Colts quarterback Andrew Luck returned in 2018 and led the team to a 10–10 record and the playoffs, where they lost in the divisional round. In a shocking move, Luck announced his retirement just days before the 2019 season began, citing a diminished passion for the game as the reason. It was surprising that the Colts finished the season with a 7–9 record despite having lost their star quarterback.
