Indiana Pacers Bio Data :

A professional basketball club headquartered in Indianapolis, the Indiana Pacers compete in the Eastern Conference of the NBA (NBA). The Pacers won three ABA championships during their time in the league (1970, 1972, 1973). To honor the state’s long-standing tradition of harness racing and the Indianapolis 500 car race, the team was renamed “The Pacers” in 1967.

For their second season, the Pacers fell in the ABA finals but the following year, backed by forwarding Roger Brown, one of the league’s first superstars and center Mel Daniels, they won the ABA championship. They won two consecutive championships in 1971–72 and 1972–73 after bringing in forward George McGinnis that year. In its nine seasons in the fledgling ABA, the team had never missed the playoffs and entered the NBA along with three other ABA franchises in 1976.

Invented in the United States, basketball is the only major sport to originate in the United States. With Britannica, you may dribble through time and learn all about basketball’s fascinating history. It took the Pacers a long time to get going in the NBA, with only one winning season in their first 13 years. The Pacers selected shooting guard Reggie Miller in the first round of the 1987 NBA Draft, and he went on to become the franchise’s all-time leading scorer.

In 1988, Rik Smits joined Miller on the squad, and in 1989–90, Indiana began a seven-year run of postseason appearances. In 1993–94 and 1994–95, the club made it to the conference finals but lost in seven games each time. The Pacers returned to the conference finals the next season after missing the playoffs the year before, this time led by first-year head coach Larry Bird, but were defeated in seven games by the eventual champion Chicago Bulls. In 1998–99, the Indiana Pacers made it to the Eastern Conference finals for the fourth time in six years.

With victory in the conference finals in 1999–2000, Pacers finally made it to the NBA finals for the first time in their history. However, the Pacers fell in six games to the Los Angeles Lakers and were denied their first NBA championship. Jermaine O’Neal was traded to the Pacers in a deal that featured the retirements of Smits and Bird, as well as the acquisition of a promising young forward.

Five successive postseason berths from 2000–01 through 2004–05, including a loss in the Eastern Conference finals, were made possible by O’Neal and Miller’s contributions. It took Indiana one more postseason appearance (a first-round loss in 2005–06) before they started a rebuilding effort that led to their return to the playoffs in 2010–11. After Miller retired in 2005, Indiana made one more postseason appearance.

All-Star forward Paul George and center Roy Hibbert led the Pacers to the 2012–13 conference finals, where they fell to the Miami Heat in seven games. In 2013–14, the Pacers had the best record in the Eastern Conference with a 16–1 start. After a seven-game playoff series win over a 38–44 Atlanta Hawks squad, the Pacers advanced to their second consecutive NBA Conference Finals appearance, when they were beaten by Miami Heat once again. Pacers star George broke his leg in 2014–15 after he was out for most of that season because he was unable to play.

Despite making the playoffs in 2015–16, Indiana was eliminated in the first round in a seven-game series. It was a repeat of last year’s loss, this time to the reigning champion Cleveland Cavaliers in a four-game playoff series determined by the narrowest total point differential (16 points) in NBA history. In the off-season, the Indiana Pacers acquired George from the Oklahoma City Thunder for a second-round playoff exit to the Cleveland Cavaliers after an unexpectedly strong season. Although standout guard Victor Oladipo was sidelined with an injury in January 2019, the Pacers nevertheless qualified for a postseason appearance in 2018–19, despite the loss.
