Hubert Jude Brown is a retired American basketball coach, a television analyst and a player. Brown is a twice-year NBA trainer with 26 years of distinction. The Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame Memorial was inducted in 2005 by Brown. Born in Hazleton, Pennsylvania, Brown, at the age of three, went to Elizabeth, New Jersey to live in a modest flat without a telephone.
The only child Brown stated his father, Charlie, was the “demanding man” who worked at the shipyards. He was born in St. Mary’s High School of Assumption in 1951. St. Mary won state football, basketball and baseball championships while at high school. Hubie Brown played Niagara University College Basketball and Baseball and graduated from school in 1955. At Niagara, Brown, who would be the star of the Harlem Globetrotters, was a teammate (and roommate) of former Utah jazz coach Frank Layden and Larry Costello and Charlie Hoxie.
Career
Brown joined the U.S. Army, joining the Army basketball squad after leaving Niagara. After being released in honour of the Eastern Professional Basketball League (the Continental Basketball Association’s precursor) Brown shortly played for the Rochester Colonels, just before they were folded in eight games. In a short span, he was a pro and an effective defence as a player, averaging 13.8 points per game. Brown returned to Niagara to study as a coach. he wanted to get a master’s degree in education.
Brown’s defensive mindset would continue his coaching career, which he began with both basketball and baseball at St. Mary Academy in 1955 in Little Falls, New York. He worked as an adjutant coach for a season at College of William & Mary in 1968 and spent nine years coaching in High School. The next season Brown became an assistant coach at Duke University. After two seasons in the NBA, Brown was the first professional lead coach of the American Basketball Association with Kentucky Colonels. Brown captained the ABA Championship Colonels in 1975.
Brown remained the coach of the colonials until the ABA-NBA merger was made by one of the two ABA teams that did not join the NBA in 1976, when the franchise disbanded. Brown later joined the NBA in the Atlanta Hawks as head coach and went 31–51 to the Hawks during the first season. But the Hawks rebounded into a team of 500 in the 1976-78 season, finished 41-41 and received Brown’s awards as Coach of the year. Two years after they moved to Atlanta, they were granted only their second title in 1979-80.
However, when Brown turned into a 31-win period in 1980–81, only three games in the season remained. Brown joined the Knicks of New York in 1982, after Red Holzman as a long time coach. After starting season 4-12, he remained with the Knicks until 1986. The Knicks fell into 24–58 in 1984–85 and 23–59 in 1985-86, after playoffs in each of Brown’s first two seasons.
But factors well beyond the control of Brown have accelerated the decline. In a game against the Kansas City Kings, Star Forward Bernard King suffered a serious knee injury for two seasons in March 1985, whereas Patrick Ewing, the leading overall pick in a 1985 NBA Draft, missed 32 games during an injuriously hit rookie season.
At the start of the 1986-87 season, Brown left the Knicks, followed by Bob Hill. Sixteen years after he was taken from his former NBA coach, Jerry West of the Memphis Grizzlies, who shot Coach Sidney Lowe after an 8-8 beginning, was once again appointed to head coach in the NBA 2002-03. The pick of Brown from Grizzlies was contentious at the time, as at 69 years of age Hubie Brown was NBA’s oldest coach.
At the time of the winning team record, Brown concluded the season with a record of 28–46. The team did however enjoy a complete 2003-04 turnaround with the 50-32 finish and playoffs in its history for the first time. The NBA Coach of the Year has again been named Brown. However, concerns about Brown’s health and age were again expressed by the 2004-05 season.
