Houston Rockets Bio Data :

The Houston Rockets are a professional basketball club headquartered in Houston, Texas, that plays in the NBA. The Houston Rockets have won two National Basketball Association (NBA) championships (1994 and 1995) as well as four Western Conference Championships during their tenure in the city of Houston. The team was originally known as the San Diego Rockets when it was created in 1967, and it relocated to Houston in 1971 following four consecutive losing seasons.

In addition to a pair of future Hall of Famers—Elvin Hayes, who had played for the University of Houston, and small Calvin Murphy—the early Rockets teams were coached by Rudy Tomjanovich, who would go on to coach the Rockets for a total of twelve seasons. Houston acquired superstar center Moses Malone in a trade two games into the 1976–77 season, and the Rockets went on to score their first winning season in team history and reach the conference finals that season. Malone left the franchise in 1982, and the Rockets were relegated to the NBA’s bottom echelons as a result of his departure.

With Hakeem Olajuwon, the Rockets drafted another Hall of Fame center in 1984 and quickly established him as the team’s face and symbol of excellence. This time around, Olajuwon and Ralph Sampson (both over 7 feet [2.13 meters] tall) led the Rockets to another NBA Finals trip, but they were beaten in round two by the Celtics once again. Though they qualified for the postseason every year during the decade, they were unable to go past the second round in any postseason games for much of that decade.

As head coach, Tomjanovich assumed his responsibilities halfway through the 1991–92 season and helped to launch the franchise’s most successful phase in its illustrious history. Olajuwon propelled the Rockets to back-to-back NBA championships in 1993–94 and 1994–95, while the team also benefited from contributions from Sam Cassell, Robert Horry, and Clyde Drexler (during the 1994–95 season) (yet another former University of Houston star).

A year later, the Rockets added Charles Barkley to their roster, but even with three of the NBA’s 50 greatest players of all time (Olajuwon, Drexler, and Barkley) on the court together, Houston was unable to advance past the Western Conference finals. Yao Ming retired in 2011 after missing most of the previous two seasons due to injury, and the Rockets began a process of rebuilding after trading away McGrady in 2010.

A major aspect of the team’s rebuilding process was the team’s reliance on complex statistical analytics (akin to sabermetrics, which is used in baseball) in its player acquisitions. One result of the Rockets’ unconventional approach to growth was the team’s ability to earn a playoff berth in 2012–13 despite having the NBA’s youngest squad, which included the exceptional shooting guard James Harden, at the time. The following off-season, the Rockets signed star center Dwight Howard, and the team improved on its previous season’s record while advancing to the playoffs for the second consecutive season.

The team recorded its greatest record (56–26) since the Olajuwon era in 2014–15 and reached to the Western Conference finals, where they were defeated by the Golden State Warriors. The following season, the Rockets struggled to get out to a fast start, prompting an early coaching change. However, the new coaching staff was unable to correct the chemistry and effort concerns that had plagued the club the previous season. After finishing with a 41–41 record in the regular season, Houston qualified for the playoffs as the eighth seed. However, the Rockets were eliminated from the postseason in five games.

That resulted in another coaching change during the off-season, and new head coach Mike D’Antoni deployed his high-efficiency, fast-paced offense with Harden at the point guard position. Consequently, the Rockets set an NBA record by making 1,181 three-point shots during the 2016–17 season, en route to a 55–win season and a second-round playoff exit. As a result of the addition of star point guard Chris Paul during the off-season, Houston reached new heights in 2017–18, setting a new franchise mark for regular-season victories (65) and breaking its own league record most three-point field goals made (1,256).

Houston progressed to the conference finals, but an unfortunate injury to Chris Paul in game five of the series allowed the Warriors to win the series in seven games and proceed to the NBA Finals. Despite their early-season struggles, the Houston Rockets entered the playoffs as one of the most exciting teams in the NBA, according to NBA.com. However, despite this momentum, the Rockets were knocked out of the postseason once again by the Warriors, this time in the conference semifinals.
