Hillsboro Hops Bio Data :

The Hillsboro Hops are a Minor League Baseball team that is based in Hillsboro, Oregon, which is part of the larger Portland metropolitan area. They now play in the American League’s Northwest Division. They are considered members of the High-A-West and play in the Hops division because of their relationship with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Ron Tonkin Field, the stadium where they play their home games, was built in 2013 and has been in use since then. Despite the team’s terrible home field, the Yakima Bears of the Northwest League began looking into relocation options as early as 2011 despite weak development on a new ballpark to replace their subpar home field.

The team sought to migrate away from the city’s deteriorating economy in order to build a brighter future for itself and its fans. After a failed attempt to relocate the club to Vancouver, Washington, the team was offered a move to Hillsboro, Oregon, in June 2012, with the intention of starting play the following season. The offer was accepted by the club. On June 5, after reaching an agreement with the team that was approved by the town council, the League of Professional Baseball, and the franchise on June 8, the contract was signed. The city and the team negotiated an agreement on June 26 that is expected to be approved by Major League Baseball by the end of August.

The Hillsboro Hops were not officially christened until October 16, despite the fact that the groundbreaking ceremony for a new 4,500-seat stadium took place on September 21. The Hops were an affiliate of the Pacific Coast League’s Beavers after being created in Portland until the team was relocated to Tucson at the end of the 2010 season. Minor league baseball was not available in the greater Portland area in 2011 and 2012. On June 14, 2013, the Hillsboro Hops played their inaugural game, losing 3–2 in a shootout to the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes.

Ryan Gebhardt had the team’s first hit, while Brian Billigen’s sacrifice flies brought in the team’s first run, giving the team its first RBI. The team won their first game on June 18 against the Portland Sea Dogs, following a 1-0 loss to the Eugene Emeralds on opening day at Hillsboro Ballpark on June 17. Jordan Parr hit the first home run in Hops history in front of a sellout crowd of 4,710 when the team’s inaugural home opener was played in front of the home run record.

The team’s mascot, Barley, first appeared on the pitch on June 28, 2013, and has since become well-known. The Hops set a new franchise attendance record in 2014 with a record-breaking crowd of 138,732 supporters at their home stadium. They also won the league’s divisional and league championships, as well as the overall league championship. J. R. House coached the squad, which included former big leaguers Doug Drabek and Mark Grace, as well as other former major leaguers on his staff. J. R. House led the team as captain. Hillsboro won the championship series in straight games against the Vancouver Canadians, who were defending champions for the third year in a row.

The squad achieved yet another franchise attendance record in 2015, attracting a total of 143,412 fans on 38 occasions (an average of 3,774 fans per game). Aside from it, they won their second league title in a row. The 2017 National Women’s League All-Star Game was hosted by the Hops. On August 28, 2019, the Hops made their sixth consecutive postseason participation, breaking the previous Northwest League record of five consecutive postseason appearances held by the Vancouver Canadians. It was their first appearance in the Northwest League postseason since 2015 when they advanced by defeating the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 2–0 in the divisional round. They advanced to the championship round for the first time since 2015.

The most recent of these occurred in Game 1 when Andy Yeezy hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning, giving Hillsboro a 3–1 lead heading into Game 2. The Hops were lost in Game 2 (9–1), but they came back to win Game 3 with a two-run ninth-inning rally. Royal’s blunder was the reason the Hops were down 6–0 in Game 4. In Game 5, Hillsboro won their third National Women’s League title and first since 2015, completing off a season-ending series victory of 3–2.

The Minor League Baseball season has been postponed until further notice due to the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak. The Hops, along with five other Northwest League teams, were relocated to the High-A-West as part of Major League Baseball’s reorganization of Minor League Baseball in 2020. In 2021, the Hops were relocated to the Northwest League. For the foreseeable future, they will continue to be the Arizona Diamondbacks’ High-A affiliate.
