Guillermo del Toro Bio Data :
Guillermo del Toro (born October 9, 1964) is a Mexican filmmaker, screenwriter, and producer who is best known for infusing his horror and fantasy films with an emotional and conceptual complexity that is rarely seen in other genres of cinema. Guillermo del Toro’s films have received widespread critical acclaim. His early years were marked by an interest in both film and horror fiction on the part of Del Toro. He began making short films when he was sixteen years old, and he went on to study filmmaking at the University of Guadalupe in Mexico. In the years that followed, he studied the art of cinematic makeup under the direction of renowned makeup artist Dick Smith.
He worked as a special effects makeup artist for most of the 1980s, and he and his brother also cofounded Necropia, a special effects firm, during that time period. Several episodes of the television horror series Hora marcada (which aired from 1988 to 1990) were written and directed by Del Toro before he wrote and directed his debut feature film, Cronos (1993).
The Mexican Academy of Film awarded the film with nine Ariel Awards, including those for best picture, best director, best screenplay, and best original story. The film, which is about the ramifications of a gadget that offers immortality, was nominated for nine Ariel Awards. It also took home the Grand Prize at the International Critics’ Week competition held during the Cannes Film Festival.
His next picture, Mimic (1997), was an American Miramax production starring Mira Sorvino, and it was released in theatres on December 17, 1997. Following the popularity of the first novel, he authored El espinazo del diablo (The Devil’s Backbone), a ghost story set around the conclusion of the Spanish Civil War, which he published after the first novel was published. He garnered widespread recognition with his comic-book adaptations Blade II (2002) (with Wesley Snipes) and Hellboy (2004) (which he wrote as well), both of which were released in 2002 and 2004 respectively.
In 2006, del Toro wrote and directed Pan’s Labyrinth, a visually spectacular and thematically sophisticated fantasy picture that was nominated for Academy Awards in the categories of makeup, art design, and cinematography, among other honors. Later, he co-wrote and directed the action films Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008) and Pacific Rim (2013), which were both more popular in foreign nations than in the United States. Critics were split on the gothic horror film Crimson Peak, which was released last year (2015).
It was nominated for 13 Academy Awards and took home four of them, including the Best Picture Oscar, for Del Toro’s spellbinding fantasy romance The Shape of Water (2017), for which he also co-wrote the story and co-wrote the script. Del Toro also received the Academy Award for best director, the Golden Globe Award for best director, and the BAFTA Award for best director, among other honors.
He told the story of an opportunistic carnival worker (Bradley Cooper) who comes into contact with a manipulative psychotherapist (Kevin Bacon) in Nightmare Alley, his third directorial effort (Cate Blanchett). In this film, del Toro wrote the screenplay as well as directed it, which was based on a novel by William Lindsay Gresham.
Among his other credits include the screenplays for Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012) and its two sequels, as well as the screenplays for Del Toro’s own movies (2013 and 2014). He has also created television shows such as The Strain (2014–17) and Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia (2016–18), both of which are based on novels written with Chuck Hogan and Daniel Kraus, respectively, as well as a sequel to the latter, 3Below: Tales of Arcadia (2018–19), among other projects.
