Guillermo del Toro (born October 9, 1964) is a Mexican filmmaker, screenwriter, and producer who is best known for infusing his horror and fantasy films with an emotional and conceptual complexity that is rarely seen in other genres of cinema. Guillermo del Toro’s films have received widespread critical acclaim. His early years were marked by an interest in both film and horror fiction on the part of Del Toro. He began making short films when he was sixteen years old, and he went on to study filmmaking at the University of Guadalupe in Mexico. In the years that followed, he studied the art of cinematic makeup under the direction of renowned makeup artist Dick Smith.
Career
He worked as a special effects makeup artist for most of the 1980s, and he and his brother also cofounded Necropia, a special effects firm, during that time period. Several episodes of the television horror series Hora marcada (which aired from 1988 to 1990) were written and directed by Del Toro before he wrote and directed his debut feature film, Cronos (1993).
The Mexican Academy of Film awarded the film with nine Ariel Awards, including those for best picture, best director, best screenplay, and best original story. The film, which is about the ramifications of a gadget that offers immortality, was nominated for nine Ariel Awards. It also took home the Grand Prize at the International Critics’ Week competition held during the Cannes Film Festival.
His next picture, Mimic (1997), was an American Miramax production starring Mira Sorvino, and it was released in theatres on December 17, 1997.
