Capps was born in Opelika, Alabama, on April 17, 1967, the son of a Baptist minister and an Auburn University student. Both of his parents became teachers in Brewton, Alabama, after he was born. When Capps was in the seventh grade, his family moved to Fairhope, Alabama, where he acquired a lifelong love of theatre, eventually obtaining a partial scholarship to Tulane University in New Orleans to pursue acting, graduating with a B.F.A. in 1989.
Capps didn’t just study acting at Tulane, though. He also picked up the guitar and joined the House Levelers, a band that specialised in “thrash folk,” as the band put it.The duo formed Stavin’ Chain in 1998 and signed with Thomas Ruf’s Ruf Records in Germany, releasing a single album called Stavin’ Chain in 1999 before breaking up. As a result of a chance meeting with Shainee Gabel while she was making a documentary called “Anthem,” Capps’ music ended up being used in the finished film.
After hearing about an unpublished novel his father, Everett Capps, had written, Capps told Gabel about it, and when Gabel read it, she felt she wanted to make a movie about it.
