Virginia Cathryn “Gena” Rowlands (born June 19, 1930) is an American retired actress with a career spanning six decades of film, stage, and television. She’s also remembered for her roles in Woody Allen’s Another Woman (1988) and The Notebook, directed by her son Nick Cassavetes (2004). Rowlands was born in Cambria, Wisconsin, on June 19, 1930. Mary Allen (Neal), her mum, was a housewife who later became an actress and went by the stage name Lady Rowlands. Edwin Myrwyn Rowlands, her father, was a banker and state legislator. He was of Welsh origin and a member of the Wisconsin Progressive Party. David Rowlands was her brother.

Career

Rowlands worked in repertory theatre groups and at the Provincetown Playhouse in the early 1950s. She made her Broadway debut in The Seven Year Itch, which she also performed as part of a nationwide production. She appeared opposite Edward G. Robinson in the Broadway play Middle of the Night in 1956. Rowlands appeared in the 26-episode syndicated TV series Top Secret (1954–55) with Paul Stewart. In 1955, she appeared as a guest star on Robert Montgomery Presents, Armstrong Circle Theatre, Studio One, Appointment with Adventure, The United States Steel Hour, and Goodyear Television Playhouse, among other anthology television shows. Rowlands starred opposite her husband in the western series Laramie in 1959. She starred in Stephen McNally’s Target: The Corruptors! and the adventure series The Islanders, set in the South Pacific. In 1963, she appeared as a guest star in The Lloyd Bridges Show, 77 Sunset Strip, Bonanza, The Virginian, and Breaking Point, among other shows. She appeared in two series of Burke’s Law and the medical drama Dr. Kildare in 1964. She starred in four Alfred Hitchcock Presents episodes, three of which were after the show was renamed The Alfred Hitchcock Hour. In 1967, she was cast in the prime-time ABC soap opera Peyton Place as socialite Adrienne Van Leyden. Rowlands received her third Emmy for her role in Mira Nair’s HBO film Hysterical Blindness in 2002. She made an appearance as Mrs. Hellman in an episode of Numb3rs from the third season the next year. She portrayed a Holocaust survivor whose entire family was murdered. The Nazis confiscated a painting that belonged to the family. The artwork reappeared later. The artwork was lent to a Los Angeles art gallery by the current owner, but it was looted while on display. Rob Morrow’s character, F.B.I. agent Don Eppes, wants to find out what happened. Rowlands was praised for her performance in this film. She has also served as a spokeswoman for victims of Nazi persecution, so this position was a natural fit for her.

Her son Nick Cassavetes directed The Notebook (2004), which she later appeared in. In the same year, she received her first Daytime Emmy for her appearance in The Incredible Mrs. Ritchie as Mrs. Evelyn Ritchie.
