Frank Farian (born July 18, 1941) is a German record producer and composer who co-founded and was the driving force behind the disco-pop group Boney M. in the 1970s and the Latin pop band No Mercy in the 1980s. His approach of forming bands with distinct visual representations from their recorded performances, as he did with Milli Vanilli, has sparked debate throughout his career. He owns the MCI record label as well as a number of subsidiaries.
Farian began his career as a certified cook before pursuing a career in music. Under the name “Frankie Farian,” he published “Will You Ever Be Mine” in April 1967. He wanted to be a solo artist in the beginning of his career, but he had little success until his song “Baby Do You Wanna Bump” (a version of Prince Buster’s 1967 hit “Al Capone”), which he published under the moniker Boney M., became famous.
