Felton LaFrance Spencer (born January 5, 1968) is a former American professional basketball player who played in the National Basketball Association at the centre position.

Career

The Minnesota Timberwolves picked Spencer with the 6th overall selection in the 1990 NBA draught. Spencer shared centre duty with 7’3″ senior Randy Breuer as a freshman, but he nevertheless put up impressive numbers, scoring 7.1 points and 7.9 rebounds per game while shooting 51.2 percent from the field. He had 272 offensive rebounds at the end of the season, which was good for seventh in the NBA at the time. He also set a single-season record for the young franchise, blocking 121 shots, which stood until Kevin Garnett’s rookie season in 1995-96. Spencer was selected to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team that year for his efforts. Spencer’s playing time decreased during the next two years with the arrival of Luc Longley the next season. Minnesota traded Spencer to the Utah Jazz for power forward/center Mike Brown after the 1992–93 season. Spencer took over as Mark Eaton’s successor in Utah, providing the Jazz with good shooting, rebounding, and safety at the pivot spot. In 1993–94, he averaged 8.6 points and 8.3 assists while shooting 50.5 percent from the field as a compliment to John Stockton and Karl Malone. Spencer and the Jazz seemed to be on their way to glory in 1994–95, but he ruptured his left Achilles tendon and was forced to retire after 34 games.

Utah went on to win 60 regular-season games but were eliminated in the first round of the NBA Finals. While healing from an Achilles injury, he missed the first 11 games of the 1995–96 season, but went on to appear in the remaining 71, starting 70 of them and scoring 5.6 points and 4.3 rebounds in 17.8 minutes per game. He had a career-high 52.0 percent field-goal percentage, tying Adam Keefe for the team’s second-best record. After losing Shaquille O’Neal to the Lakers as a free agent, the Orlando Magic acquired Spencer on August 10, 1996 for guard Brooks Thompson, forward Kenny Gattison, and a first-round draught pick. However, he only appeared in one game for the Magic before being exchanged to Golden State in exchange for Rony Seikaly. He went on to play 71 games for the Warriors, finishing second in rebounding and seventh in blocked shots. In 1997–98, his position was reduced by the emergence of second-year man Erick Dampier as the starter, as well as the drafting of rookie Adonal Foyle, and he played just 68 games as a backup. In 1998–99, he appeared even less, playing just 6.1 minutes per game in 26 games off the bench. After the 2001–02 season, Spencer announced his retirement.
