Club de Metz football is an association of French football based in Metz, Lorraine. The FC Metz or simply Metz is known as the FC Metz. The club was established in 1932 and is the leader of the French football team at Ligue 1. At Stade Saint-Symphorien in the city, Metz is playing his home matches.

Frédéric Antonetti is currently managing the team. Metz has spent 61 seasons in the first league and 17 in the second league over his 88-year history. Although they never won the top flight, they won two times the Coupe de France and two times the Coupe de la Ligue.

Founded in 1932 by the combining of two amateurs, the FC Metz is one of France’s oldest professional football teams and soon afterwards a professional team. Its roots go back further in 1905 when Metz was part of the German Empire and it was founded by the Metz SpVgg Metz club.

For a season in 1913–14, before the outbreak of the First World War, SpVgg played in the tier-one Westkreis-Liga. Some of the club’s players belonged to the 1919 Cercle Athlétique Messin and became FC Metz in 1932. In 1920, 1921, 1922, 1924, 1926, 1927, 1929 Messin became a leading Club in the Division of Honor – Lorraine.

Career

From 1933, the club played the north in the French second division, won the league for the first time, in 1935. [3] In the first division the team became a mid-table side until the outbreak of war again interfered with play. In 1939–40, FCM did not participate in the leading regional contests. The club was to play in the Gauliga Westmark during World War II in the Moselle department, annexed by Germany. The club finished each year in the three completed seasons of this league between 1941 and 1944.

In 1944–45 the club did not participate in French football but came back to the 1st League in 1945–46, 17th out of 18 clubs, in spite of the fact that the town was re-taken by allied troops in the autumn 1944. The league was expanded to 20 clubs, and it was only in 1950 when the League membership came to an end that the team had not been relegated and remained at the highest level. Because of its catastrophic condition in the year after the war: the stadium was damaged almost beyond repair, Metz was allowed to remain within Leagues 1.

The team was supposed to start again from scratch. The club bound again immediately after Lyon 2 and returned to the first division. Lyon finished second. In his first season back, FC Metz returned strongly to the ring and finished fifth. Following this, the club again went season by season to fight the relegation and finished second in 1958, returning to Ligue 2. It took three seasons to return to Ligue 1 in 1961, but it only lasted in the first flight for just one year. FC Metz has been in the second division for the next five seasons.

FC Metz once again climbed up the top level of French football in 1967; until 2001, the team was relegated to the highest level. After losing their first stage of the European Cup Winners Cup in 1984–85, FC Metzen was most likely to be defeated in Camp NOU after losing 4–2 to Barcelona at the Stade Saint-Symphorien. However, a Yugoslav striker Tony Kurbos has shocked Les Grenats by a 4–1 win in the second leg to add 6–5 for the French side.

The team ran in the UEFA Champions League in 1998, but lost to the HJK Helsinki team from Finland at the third round. Despite the regular presence of the extremely hopeful future, Miralem Pjanić, later transferred to Giants of Lyon at an astonishing cost of 7.5 million euro, was relinquished by the FC Metz from Ligue 1, finishing at the top of the table in 2006. Metz reached the 18th position in Ligue 2 at the end of the 2011–12 season. He relegated himself to the National Championship in a very tense situation on 20 May 2012, the Third Level of French Football following a 1–1 draw with Tours at home.

Metz only spent one season in this field, rebuilding his first team and then winning the promotion for Ligue 1 with an iconic former player Albert Cartier as coach. Sadly, the team was again delegated to League 2, but the next season won promotion. This time, Metz has managed to finish 14th and ensured another Ligue 1 season. Metz endured an appalling campaign during the 2017–18 League 1 season, losing eleven of his 12 first matches. Later the club recovered but finished the table and was relegated to Ligue 2.

Later this season. FC Metz is also recognised for its successful youth academy in France and Europe, producing star players such as Rigobert Song, Robert Pires, Louis Saha, Emmanuel Adebayor, Papiss Cissé and Miralem Pjanić as well as for Sadio Mané. In importing young perspectives, the town’s proximity to Luxembourg (around 55 km) plays an important role. The club board is very close to the Football Federation of Luxembourg. The G D’s amateur Leagues were joined by Nicholas “Nico” Braun, the best ever goaltender of the team, as well as Pjanic and, closer to our times, Chris Philipps.
